Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir 2018

To celebrate my 9,000 reviews on vivino, here is a beautiful Pinot Noir.

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Strong fruity nose with bing cherries, raspberries, sweet strawberries, spices, oak, vanilla, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, earth and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blueberries, black cherries, light earth, herbs, spices, vanilla, cedar, black pepper, light cola, dark coffee and licorice. black pepper.

Medium plus in finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This Pinot Noir from Burgundy is already drinking very nicely, but still extremely young. Well balanced and smooth with nice complexity and mouthfeel.

I had it blind right out of the bottle. That was a nice surprise. I called 2018 Burgundy Pinot Noir, but I did not see this kind of bottle coming... What a great experience to blind taste such an iconic wine.

There is always an aura when drinking these kind of wines, but drinking them blind, gives you a perspective that might be missed otherwise.

Needed 2 hours in the decanter to open up properly, and bring more complexity. Much better once it opens up.

Robert Parker 94 points.

I had an older vintage of this wine a year ago, and it is such a different wine. Will continue to age nicely in the next 30 to 40 years.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

Aux Malconsorts Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2008

Blinded, everyone agreed this was Burgundian but had their own ideas on village, vintage, and producer. No one figured out it was from Vosne - perhaps it just lacked the hallmark perfume and exoticism one might think of in Vosne (once more, the fallacy of generalisation in wine). MR was spot on with vintage though, and he was insistent about it due to that touch of austerity in the finish he typically finds in 08’s. As for producer, only MJ thought of Cathiard once the village was established. I was tossing between Mugneret-Gibourg (KP rebuts not sexy enough) and Meo (again KP rebuts not bright enough). What a tough blind by KP!

The wine itself was powerful and concentrated, with lots of mid-palate density, yet as MR observed, a tight finish. Flavours-wise, it featured heaps of red and black fruits (leaning more towards the latter) and some noticeable oak (though not decadent - nice quality!), as well as some earth and meat which probably threw me off in the blind. Having said that, the Vosne origin may have been linked to via the finish which had ample spice notes. A silky texture, lovely mineral undertow and tight acidity wraps up the wine. Really excellent wine but the pieces have yet to fall together to maximise drinkability. One to keep your hands off for now.

Collio Pinot Bianco 2019

Beautiful full deep medium gold… surprising for such a young white wine. Enticing bright aroma of spring flowers and juicy dripping ripe orchard fruit. Every once in a while you run into a wine that just knocks you back a step.. this is such a wine. Rich, ripe, round, weighted, serious, lip-smacking good, complex, alive, smile-inducing, with a finish that makes you want to pour a glass for everyone you know. We consumed this wine with extremely well-made takeout Indian… Tikka Chicken, warm spicy Chana, and downright hot Lamb Vindaloo… this elixir stood up to the hodge-lodge and made it better. I need to buy this wine by the case. — 2 years ago

Berba Slavonija Graševina (Welschriesling) 2017

Deep bright yellow gold (barrel fermented?). Initially shy but inviting nose of dried apple and white pepper. Spicy medium palate confirms the palate as well as the barrel fermentation(!), adding a bit of orange candy once it opens up (still dry, tho). Moderate finish typical of the style. Gott say I thought I'd be disappointed or at least underwhelmed by this wine. Not at all. This is a really nice dry expression of the variety that's got more complexity than expected. Drink now with pork or turkey. — 6 months ago

Clos Erasmus

Priorat Grenache Blend 1998

You will appreciate this wine more once you’ve seen the YouTube movie “Dreaming of Wine” about the rejuvenation of the wine industry In Priorat after 900 years. A fascinating story and well worth the time to view the movie. Clos Erasmus was founded and still run by Daphne Glorian, the blonde woman in the movie. The wine itself is one of the 1001 Wines to Drink Before you Die and described as “one of the few cult wines in Spain”. The wine itself in colour was not as dense and dark as I was expecting after a decant though, a substantial deposit was left. Lovely red and black fruited aromatics with dried herbs, violets and ripe berries, although with porty and raisiny notes - cocoa and a touch of tar with granular tannins. Arguably a bit long in the tooth - depends what you are looking for. Bought at a wine shop in Gratallops, the little village in Priorat in June last year, 2022 after a tasting at Clos Mogador, also in the movie. Tasted a while ago Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave this wine 99 points “flirting with perfection “. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. — a year ago

Graševina 2019

Straightforward, but no complaints! Nice, balanced, goes well with food, super approachable. Would get it again! — Purchased again, addl note from Kyle, not a by-the-case wine, but a fun once in a while guy that screams out for cheese pairings — 2 years ago

Château Bellefont-Belcier

Grand Cru Classe St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Here's a delicious one from France.

Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.

Strong nose of blackberries, black plums, black currants, cedar, tobacco, vanilla, leather, spices, dark coffee, milk chocolates and peppercorn. Pretty, once it opens up.

Full-bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate and fruity, with blackberries, earth, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, vanilla, licorice, spices, light alcohol, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, leather, pencil lead, herbs and black pepper.

Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a delicious 5 year old Right Bank Bordeaux. Drinking very nicely now, although still young.

This 2016 vintage is showing very nicely now. Well balanced with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.

Still a little hot at the back of the throat, at this point, but I love the cedar and sweet cherry notes.

Needs 90 minutes to open up properly, so give it time. Good by itself once it opens up.

Will age nicely in the next 15 years, and has good potential to become even better.

Tasty, tangy and spicy. A delicious wine from a great vintage.

A good food wine too, that will pair nicely with BBQ Meats. I paired it with cheeses and green olives.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are grown on limestone soil.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Château Desmirail

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

2020 vintage. A great effort from this rather obscure Cru Classé that once was part of the immense Rauzan estate and even briefly owned by Château Palmer, before it was sold in 1980 to the legendary Lucien Lurton. Since 1992 it is managed by Denis Lurton ( one of the 10 children of Lucien). A blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. The great ( and very humble) Eric Boissenot consults. Interesting fact: the Merlots were harvested very early in 3 days from September 17th until the 20th, just before the rains on the 21st, that reduced the alcoholic degree of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that came in at 12% abv., creating a very fresh balanced blend. Dark red with purplish rim. Seductive perfume combining black cherries, cassis, flowers, cedar wood, and rosemary. Elegant and fresh, with very pure fruit, well-tamed tannin, and very good length. Abv. 13%. Very good value, an estate to watch. — a year ago

#AgedWineTuesday

A very pretty color of dark ruby with a brick rim.

Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium minus acidity.

Dry on the palate and fruit forward with nice complexity and mouthfeel.

Showing blackberries, cooked plums, figs, spices, coffee, cedar, light vanilla, milk chocolates, herbs, alcohol, vegetables, light earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This 11 year old is peaking now and showing nice balance. The nose is just gorgeous once it opens up.

Not from a good vintage, but it held up pretty well.

Delicious right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. Tannins show up after 30 minutes in the decanter.

Thank you Elvira for sharing this with me.

Good by itself or with food.

13.9% alcohol by volume.

Canonica a Cerreto

Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2015

Very expressive Chianti. Definitely needed time to open up, but once it did a lot of red fruit flavors came through supported by fine grained tannins. Aging notes as well of sweet oak and almost a bit of pleasant jammy-ness on the finish. — 2 years ago
