Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania Chardonnay 2015

See note on Delectable 187 weeks ago. This is my last bottle and it is superb. With age this wine has developed more stone fruit (white peach) and less citrus notes. Perfect balance with French Oak and a creamy leesy influence. As HH said “100% Malolactic fermentation but it doesn’t show “. Ticks all the boxes of an excellent modern day new world Chardonnay. Grapes are shipped in a refrigerated container from the Coal River Tasmania to the Adelaide Hills where the wine is made at Shaw and Smith (the owner of Tolpuddle). — 17 hours ago

Freycinet Vineyard

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2023

We went to the fancy tasting rooms and the wines were meh. We went to the cheap and cheerful room at Freycinet and it was kapow! Great wine! — 3 months ago

Dawson & James

Pinot Noir 2017

Rich and mouth filling. Spices, red and black fruits. Medium bodied with medium plus intensity. Coats the palate. Fermentation with 40% whole bunches. A classic Tasmanian Pinot. Very good but a point or two behind their stellar 2015. 98 points and Top 100 Wines of 2020 from James Halliday. — 17 hours ago

Tasmania Riesling 2016

Yet another grape that does well in Tasmania - Riesling. White florals. The palate is round and developed with muted acid. Drinking at its peak. — a month ago

Haven’t had many Riesling from Tasmania but the few I’ve had have been quite good - I know Pinot Noir plantings are quite abundant but how about Riesling

Sailor Seeks Horse

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2022

Certainly in the conversation as to the quirkiest producer name. From the d’Entrecasteaux Peninsula south of Hobart where there are other big names in Tassie Pinot like Home Hill Estate. No specific notes but these wines have that trademark voluminous mouth feel you get from this terroir - surprisingly for the cool/cold climate. Red and black fruits. Delicious is an overused descriptor but there is no other word to describe this. — 4 months ago

@Bob McDonald there’s an interesting back story written by the vineyard owners about the name “There was a handwritten sign on the wall at the Red Velvet Lounge in Cygnet, our local coffee and cake respite from the Tasmanian weather. It said, “Sailor Seeks Horse” and went on to explain that the author had sailed solo around the world and ridden across the US from coast to coast and back again. On a mule. He’d then decided he wanted to travel around Tasmania by horse but didn’t have one. So, was there anyone who would lend him one? If they didn’t have a horse then a pony would do.”
Actually Bernie Herberts couldn’t acquire a four legged friend and bought a $10 bike at the local tip and rode it around Tasmania. Bernie has written a number of books about his travels.

@David White Thanks for the back story David.

Eddystone Point

Pinot Noir

This is becoming my great everyday quaffer with the 2022 rated 95pts by Decanter World Wide Awards DWWA plus Huon Hook (real review) also gave it 95 pts. It’s same stable as Tasmanian Bay of Fires PN
It’s about $US 30 so excellent value rated up there with $150 Burgundies

Estate Tasmania Pinot Noir 2017

Notes from May 2023 still apply. Voluptuous is the word. No less than 4 Trophies on the Australian Show Circuit from perhaps the most southerly vineyard in Australia in the Huon Valley. Rich, mouth filling and delicious. This is the regular Estate bottling - the Reserve is even more impressive. — 25 days ago

Pale ruby in color; cherries, hibiscus, and black tea on the nose; high acidity; low tannins; tastes like cranberries, pomegranates, red currants, and wet gravel with a long finish. — a month ago
