Château Le Bon Pasteur

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Dark, glass-clinging reddish purple with near opaque core. Lush, inviting nose of baked plum and dark berry cobbler. Equally lush, full palate echoes the nose adding juicy red plum, blackberry, and fruit ash. Velvety medium tannins entry to finish. Medium acidity. Lengthy, dark finish. Can't really go wrong with Pomerol, and this wine is further evidence of that. A good solid vintage from the house that put Michel Rolland on the map. Drink now through 2029. — 5 days ago

Revana Family Vineyard

St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Heidi Barrett put this winery on the map. Lush red fruit with subtle tannins that are multi tiered. Has years to continue to mature. Their wines have not stayed at this level since Heidi left. Too bad!! — 2 years ago

Chateau Montelena

The Montelena Estate Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Famed winery that put Napa on the map in Paris. This is an old world wine, not super bold or fruit forward. Might need more time on the shelf. — 3 years ago

Grange Bin 95 Shiraz 1991

95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet. Considered to be one of the top 5 Granges in the 50 years between 1951 and 2001. I’ve always rated the 91 slightly higher than the 1990 which put Grange on the map in the USA when Wine Spectator made it their Wine of the Year and front page of their magazine. Nicely mature at 32 years with at least another decade or two in front of it. Black fruits of berry and cherry with mocha and dark chocolate. An absolutely smashing opulent wine which is made to go with Roast Lamb. Next one in 5 to 10 years. — 7 months ago

Also drinking a wine like this is cause for celebration at the likely lifting of punitive tariffs on Australian wine imposed by China a few years ago.

Merryvale Vineyards

Starmont Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The was a Last Bottle find that I jumped all over. It did not disappoint. While Cabs from Carneros, though technically in Napa, I find are not quite as technically complex as those from Oakville, Rutherford, Stags Leap or Howell, Spring or Diamond Mtn, this one demonstrated a masterful blend of the right grapes. For such a young wine, this was rich, supple tannins, with leather and Connecticut wrapper tobacco notes behind the deep fruit. I’m keeping this winery in my personal map! Wish I’d bought more than 6 bottles! — 3 years ago

Bricco Quaglia Moscato d'Asti 2022

Ming L
9.0

The bottle that put the winery on the map.

Compared to the Vietti bottling that got me hooked on Mascato d’Asti, this single Cru is more viscous and taste a bit sweeter. Certainly the acidity is there for balance. It was delicious and we were drinking too fast. Would be lovely to pair with some light desserts. Lemon pound cake maybe?

Tenuta di Trecciano

Chianti Colli Senesi Sangiovese Blend 2020

DOCG #chianti at the sub $20 price point can be all over the map in terms of quality. I knew I hit the jackpot on first sniff and sip of this producer. Earthy cherry, dark fruit on nose, lovely balance on palate; distinctive #sangiovese earthy-soft spice on finish, quite nicely knit Chianti with excellent QPR for ~$15 at #totalwine . — a year ago

Château Palmer

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1961

Tasted blind, although we are now told that all of the reds tonight are 61's so our tasting becomes a single blind horizontal exercise. This wine is brownish tawny, translucent and very old-looking. Perfumed nose with notes of cola, rhubarb, cherry and earth. Has a light structure with faded fruit at first. We're told this bottle was a leaker with the lowest fill of all of tonight's bottles. Guesses are all over the map including Italian and very old red burg (me). We've had spectacular 61 Palmers before and in the first part of the evening, this bottle was missing it. BUT, late in the evening (and 9 hours after opening) this caught its sea legs and grew in volume, complexity and delivery. My rating was crossed out three times as I upgraded this while we all marvelled at the improvement... and in the end, this 61 Palmer showed it's pedigree and overall power. Glad we waited it out!
