Upside surprise. Some lift on finish makes you pay attention. Could go longer. — 5 months ago

Pirouette Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Pours deep rich red. Initial mild dark fruit quickly changes to a quick burst of baking spices and cherries and then changes to a dryness of plums. Some soft tannins on the back. Love the changing layers. — 7 months ago

Darker and richer in flavor than most merlots. Great finish. Nice acidic backbone, very nice. — 3 years ago

Far Niente Winery

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2019

1 of CA's oldest wineries, Far Niente, founded 1885 by John Benson. Winery flourished until Prohibition, when it was abandoned & fell into complete disrepair. Stately stone shell of a winery purchased in 1979 by Gil Nickel. A big wine! Tropical and stone fruit aromas with complex spice and oak notes. On the palate apple, peach and citrus flavors, creamy, with buttery toasty oak, fig/honey tones. Long finish ending with vibrant acidity & mineral character. Consistent. — 10 days ago

Rocca dell'Olmo

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Trader Joe’s. Long gone! For 15$ quite good! This is the 2019 - one of the best vintages in Piedmont. So - in this case even lousy cheapo wineries made great wine. Tastes like 40$. Roses, super astringent, violets. Hint Eucalyptus. A little rough: Bought a case most gone should have bought 2 - will age the last 3 bottles just out of curiosity - could go another 5-10 years. Thanks Scott for this find!!! — 6 months ago

@Pinotman /// Andreas Aaaargh!! Was at Trader Joe’s a few hours ago browsing. They still have the 2020 edition but guess who rifled through all 24 bottles on display looking for a bottle of the 2019? No dice. They rotate stock waay better than your average bear/grocery store. Enjoy!!

Pedestal Columbia Valley Merlot 2016

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark inky in color with a reddish rim.

Very pretty nose with black fruits, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, tobacco, chocolates, coffee, Indian spices, cola and light black tea.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with sweet raspberries, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, chocolates, toast, light vanilla, dark coffee, Indian spices, light cola licorice and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a delicious 9 year old Merlot from Columbia Valley. Rich and extracted. Spicy and entertaining.

Peaking now and will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 3 hours of airtime.

Nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Smooth and elegant. Fruit forward and tangy. The high alcohol is well integrated by now.

Good by itself as a sipping wine.

A blend of 75% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 22 months in (85% new) French Oak barrels.

14.9% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$75.

Kocabag

Öküzgözü-Bogazkere 2021

Really intense dark reddish purple hues with equally powerful aromatics of plums, black currant, and lots of baking spice. Some cherry tang too, if that’s a thing. Aromatic pipe tobacco notes. Stony and dusty. Yum! Huge body and mouthfeel to match. Long and satisfying finish. 14.5% alcohol!

Really unique wine making style in that some of it is aged in tuff “tanks” carved into the ground. Kocabağ is the only one of the three commercial wineries in Cappadocia to use such tanks, and they may very easily be the only winery in the world to do so.
