Bernard Levet

Côte Rôtie Syrah 2021

This is the standard Côte Rôtie from Agnes Levet that’s a blend of different parcels. However, the philosophy and approach remain the same as “La Chavaroche” and “Les Journaries”. In the past, this bottling was known as “Améthyste” and only recently became more widely available in the US. “Widely” is a relative word, lol.

Opened about an hour prior to service. The 2021 pours a deep garnet/purple with a transparent core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with a gorgeous bouquet all of the different varieties and colors of brambles your heart could possibly desire along with all of the seeds and stems, freshly cracked black pepper, dried herbs, some of the animale, purple flowers some hints of old wood and yes, perhaps a kiss of brettanomyces. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is forever long, drying and loaded with even more black pepper. This is giving me total 2014 vibes and if you liked that vintage in the Northern Rhône (as I did), you’re gonna absolutely love this. Drink now through 2036.

Excellent review. Thanks. I can’t however comprehend the term ”standard” for C-Rs, as the few (roughly a dozen) I’ve tried have been amazing.

@Martin Bergo I would never want to suggest “standard” to mean anything less than special though, merely stating such suggests there is something “non-standard” available, so I do get your point.

Bodegas Tradición

30 Años Amontillado Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palomino Fino

There’s a special place in my heart for this bottle. It’s the first bottle of really really good sherry I can remember trying and despite years of tasting, it may still be the best. Retrying Tradición Amontillado over a decade later, it’s as spectacular as I remember. I wrote a bunch of notes then deleted them. Too hard to do justice to this beautiful wine. — 5 years ago

We were lucky enough to have a private tasting/tour of this boutique bodega in September 2019. The wines are all spectacular, they also have an extraordinary 50 y/o brandy de Jerez as well. Interestingly, the bodega houses a small but extraordinary art collection. I wish we could get these in Seattle. Cheers X

Awesome, I enjoy Sherry, every time I see it posted I aways say we should buy more, then I shrug because we always have so many other regions in the world we're already passionate about...Choices are challenging.

@Andrew Schirmer Wow, sounds amazing. I’m jealous! Adding that to my bucket list, doesn’t get any better than great art and great wine. @Severn Goodwin Choices are hard! (I have a similar dilemma with burgundy, given the prices) Just trust me that if you see a bottle from this producer, it’s definitely worth it.

Interesting Prosecco. Good nose but a touch to sweet on the taste. Pleasant for what it is. — 7 months ago

Podere Sapaio

Volpolo Bolgheri Red Blend 2022

Sitting for lunch in the heart of the city of Bolgheri, at a great restaurant, I had to try something I never had before. This entry level Bordeaux blend was a nice surprise.

Purple in color with a purplish rim.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing blueberries, plums, black currants, cherries, light oak, spices, light earth, herbs, tobacco leaf, dark chocolates, licorice and a touch of vanilla.

Tangy finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This young Bordeaux blend from Tuscany is already drinking nicely, even right out of the bottle. Spicy and rich.

Opulent with lots of fruits, but also some earth notes to compliment the fruits.

Tannins show up after 30 minutes of airtime. A great nose shows itself after 90 minutes in the decanter. Much better once it opens up, so be patient.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. Tangy, spicy and entertaining. I paired it with beef stew.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. Aged in oak barrels for 14 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$30.

Dow's

Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2015

Fall is here and it’s the season I love to drink port. Dow, producing Ports for over 2 centuries. One of the first to establish its own vineyards, acquiring Senhora da Ribeira, in the remote Upper Douro, in 1890 & Bomfim, in the heart of Alto Douro, in 1896. Aromas of ripe fruits, fragrant spices and sweet notes. On the palate flavors of candied apple and jammy blackberries with cacao and honey. Firm dusty tannins, good balance, long finish. Perfect now. Sullivan Vineyards

Heart of the Vineyard Red Blend 2012

Really a lovely Bordeaux style blend from Sullivan in Napa. I am biased as I spent a summer working there. Quite seamless, some nice cassis, has really come into balance. Bit of that very nice menthol laced acid refreshing note on the finish. Delicious and wonderful pairing with steaks on the grill. — 9 months ago

Clos de la Chatenière Vieilles Vignes Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chardonnay 2013

A bit disjointed. Heaps of oak then a bunch of acid on the finish. Missing the heart and soul of the wine. Had the ‘13 criot barard montrachet and I would rate that in the top 5 wines of my life. Maybe it needs more time? Madi LOVED it for the record. With schnitzel and gravy. — 2 years ago

Ultreia Saint Jacques Mencía 2018

very confused 🙈 tasting.

black olives and black pepper screamed syrah. red fruit and jaminess called for granache. but medium + acidity added confusion.

i was gambling a south rhone blend but something felt very Spanish. 🧩

this is mostly mensia 🍇 with bastardo and granache tintorera.

medium + acidity
medium - tannins
medium + body

zippy fresh red fruit with some raspberry jam, black olives, black pepper and a bit of oak spices and green pepper on the side.

medium + 🎯

perfect bistro (or the Spanish equivalent term) wine.
paired lovely with roasted 🥔, veggie hot dogs and cabbage with tahini and feta style cheese.
worked great with the salty feta.

2 hours later it opened up nicely with tannins felt more and a silkier texture.

very hard to stop drinking it, slowly.
