Hook Or Crook Cellars

Hook or Crook Cellars

Reserve Lodi Field Blend

Earthy with some tobacco notes, very smooth and the right amount of residual tannins. Very bold aroma and just enough richness to back it up. — 5 months ago

Estate Bottled Los Amigos Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Full confession. . . I’ve driven by this winery in past trips to Sonoma and failed to enter because of the name. But when I saw this bottle on winespies I decided to try. And. . . I wish I had stopped at the winery in prior visits. This 2015 drinks smoothly with soft, medium tannins. A nose that brings cherries and over ripe strawberries to the front with a small spice hint. Palate has the slight earth/chalk tones along with the fruit. A bottle that pairs well with simple homemade pizza or could go with something more elegant. Glad I have more bottles for the future. — 3 years ago

Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Unusual representation for a Lodi wine. Lighter bodied, nice minerals, acidity, and fruit! Showing plum, boysenberry, licorice Snaps, hibiscus, milk chocolate, eucalyptus on the midpalate, and pine needles on the finish. This wine reminds me of a Lorie Valley Chinon. A lot going on in this glass, considering...rating reflects QPR; this was under $10! One hour+ decant. — 8 months ago

Pearly Dewdrops Fruit Cider 2020

Plum jerkum!!! So much unfiltered stone fruit in here. Get some next time you’re in Red Hook! Reminds of Cab Franc, or maybe @Sam Shepard’s Cab Franc-inflected piss after a few glasses. — 3 years ago

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 2011

My bottle of choice for a northern Rhône themed tasting with the WNH.

Knowing this is young for La Chapelle, I double decanted this for a little over two hours before my first sip. Talk about a brick wall. Both aromatically and on the palate, this was not giving at all. At the three hour mark, clove, licorice and all spice showed up on the nose alongside tart rhubarb and a sanguine character on the palate. Both sadly (and thankfully), at hour five in the decanter, this was like a boxer who had been lulling me to sleep with body shots and then suddenly started taking hook shots to the face. Hello! This really flexed its muscles when paired with bolognese. The wine gained a floral/violet/potpourri nose with a touch of black pepper and herbs de Provence. The weight and density bulked up and it channeled a touch of meat and pepper, tar, black cherries and underripe blackberries. Acidity was energetic throughout the evening and the tannins increased by the last glass.

If opening now, I’d decant at least 4+hrs, or hold off another 5-7yrs.
