La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 2011

9.3

My bottle of choice for a northern Rhône themed tasting with the WNH.

Knowing this is young for La Chapelle, I double decanted this for a little over two hours before my first sip. Talk about a brick wall. Both aromatically and on the palate, this was not giving at all. At the three hour mark, clove, licorice and all spice showed up on the nose alongside tart rhubarb and a sanguine character on the palate. Both sadly (and thankfully), at hour five in the decanter, this was like a boxer who had been lulling me to sleep with body shots and then suddenly started taking hook shots to the face. Hello! This really flexed its muscles when paired with bolognese. The wine gained a floral/violet/potpourri nose with a touch of black pepper and herbs de Provence. The weight and density bulked up and it channeled a touch of meat and pepper, tar, black cherries and underripe blackberries. Acidity was energetic throughout the evening and the tannins increased by the last glass.

If opening now, I’d decant at least 4+hrs, or hold off another 5-7yrs.

Smith & Hook

Central Coast Proprietary Red Blend 2014

If you are a fan of Merlot, Malbec, Petit Syrah, and Cab, imagine the perfect blend of them all. This is it. Vibrant dark fruit flavors that drinks easily alone or pairs well with red meats and barbecue. Not the least expensive blend, but clearly one of the better ones. — 8 years ago

Plum jerkum!!! So much unfiltered stone fruit in here. Get some next time you’re in Red Hook! Reminds of Cab Franc, or maybe @Sam Shepard’s Cab Franc-inflected piss after a few glasses. — 5 years ago

The Red Hook Winery

Twenty One Twenty Four Reserve Red Blend 2010

Time for #MerlotThursday! and here is a nice surprise. A very good Merlot/ Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Brooklyn, NY.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate with red and black fruits, earth, chocolates, vanilla,, licorice, cedar, tobacco, herbs, spices and black pepper.

Nice length on the finish with soft tannins and tangy pomegranates.

This 9 year old is very enjoyable, soft and smooth. Good by itself or with food.

I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

Grapes are grown in long Island. Made by Robert Foley. Thank you D.J. for sharing.

13.1% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$20.

Tres Cantous Vin de voile Gaillac Mauzac 2000

Aromatically hard to distinguish this from a good Amontillado: smoked almonds, cheese rind, herb liqueur. Bone dry and racy on the palate without the bracing acidity of Vin Jaune or Amontillado. Someone hook a brother up with some fried smelt. — 8 years ago

Great red blend. Really jammy and rich. Needs lots of time to breathe. Better the second day. Maybe decant this if you’re planning on drinking the whole thing in one night? — 5 years ago

Hook & Ladder

Estate Bottled Los Amigos Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Full confession. . . I’ve driven by this winery in past trips to Sonoma and failed to enter because of the name. But when I saw this bottle on winespies I decided to try. And. . . I wish I had stopped at the winery in prior visits. This 2015 drinks smoothly with soft, medium tannins. A nose that brings cherries and over ripe strawberries to the front with a small spice hint. Palate has the slight earth/chalk tones along with the fruit. A bottle that pairs well with simple homemade pizza or could go with something more elegant. Glad I have more bottles for the future. — 5 years ago
