Joh. Jos. Prüm

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling 2017

Must be one of the best Kabinetts going around. Peach and mineral for days - the latter a product of the slatey notes of the Sonnenuhr. Hard to see it getting better than it is now although lacks the complexity of Prum’s better cuvées. — 6 months ago

Château Villa Bel-Air

Graves Red Bordeaux Blend

What a great find! Received the 2000 vintage bottle via an exchange in the Bay Area & couldn’t be more thrilled. Usually a North snob, this Product of the Boudreaux region is simply a treat. Not too many in the states left where I shop, so I was able to savior this special number 🙏🌎 — 6 years ago

Bass Phillip

The Estate Pinot Noir 2010

Complex aromas of red fruits, stalks, sous bois, and compost heap - the Bass Phillip DNA. On the palate medium weight with great intensity and soft resolved Tannins. Great length - the product of close planting and meticulous horticulture. Consistently a wonderful Pinot and as James Halliday said “eerily Burgundian “. — 7 years ago

Bodegas Sauci

S' Condado de Huelva Naranja

Paired nicely, contrasting flavors vs. Dove dark chocolate; plenty of sweetness and orange peel flavor. (Nice product). Also works almost as well vs 72% Ghirardelli — 7 years ago

Rivers-Marie

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2016

Drinks just like the bottle I had a few months ago, these always have great fruit profiles but the ‘16 seems to be even more generous and a touch more rich where the ‘15 was slightly leaner. Sometimes the vineyard blend varies slightly between vintages, but the final product is always fantastic. — 8 years ago

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi

Riserva Nipozzano Chianti Rùfina Sangiovese Blend 2014

An excellent product coming from a difficult year in Chianti region. Thanks to its position, slightly in the inland of Central Italy, allowed Rúfina to have a bit less rain compared to other regions, allowing for better maturation of the grapes. Frescobaldi produced a splendid product, full of fresh fruit, blackcurrent in particular, with slight hints of spices, round acidity and soft tannins. Let it rest for a bit before opening it. Ready to drink in 2018, open it as soon as possible or regret later. — 8 years ago

Neal Family Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

2021 vintage. Old-school styled, Napa cabbage. The solitary nod to new-school is the medium-heavy body. Focused, dark fruit presence (not as much as Freemark Abbey but not far behind either). Plenty of value to be had here. Grip if you want it. Fruit if you so desire. Obvious balance. Nicely done. First Neal product visit/tasting but it won’t be the last. 1.24.24. — 2 years ago

Matthiasson

Linda Vista Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Perhaps a bit deeper gold than expected, but the wine is sound and in a fine spot right now. Still vibrant with acid/tart fruit balance. Pretty light in weight and texture—a joy to sip and yet great to gulp during the meal. Pineapple, pear, ripe juicy apple...and a nice lingering finish...a nice balanced chard with not a sign of butter or round sweetness. Obviously a product of good choices by an experienced winemaker. — 5 years ago

Germain-Robin

Germain-Robin Aromatic Brandy Absinthe Superieure

I have long been an admirer of Germain-Robin, and I like this product, but considered as an absinthe it is a very uncharacteristic example. Prominent scent of lemon with spearmint and fennel, slighter lemongrass. The taste gives more mint and anise at first that quickly develops into lemon and leaves lemon on the finish. Think of this as as what the label says, an “aromatic brandy distilled with herbs and natural flavors added,” and it’s quite pleasant. Think of it as an absinthe, and you are likely to be left thinking that it is not what an absinthe should be. But I often enjoy experimentation outside the boundaries of a genre. The fact that it is made with an apple-honey mead as the base adds to the novelty. — 7 years ago

Château d'Esclans

Whispering Angel Côtes de Provence Rosé Blend 2018

An orchard of fruit, not quite ripe.

Not so tart cranberry, rasp. Concise, focused, This wine knows exactly what it is. Sweet tart like acidity. A great way to take the heat off in Albuquerque.
One of those easy pick up and always know what fine product you’ll get rosé’s.

Wendouree

Shiraz 2001

Still a touch of menthol/eucalypt which seems to be a characteristic of this Vineyard not necessarily the grape type. Savoury full bodied not Fruit full bodied. Amazingly strong core for 17 years of age - the product of very old vines - some going back to the 1890’s. Most Wendouree Wines are built for extended cellaring and this is no exception. Some earthy tarriness. Still with a 5 to 10 year future. — 8 years ago

CJ Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2015

The CJ isn’t up to my Melka expectation, it is a lower cost product, but it is ok at 10 years old. It did take awhile to open up. — a year ago

The Standish Wine Company

Single Vineyard Shiraz 2019

No formal notes. Rich plummy aromas and obviously the product of old vines. Standish has somewhat of a cult wine following in Australia and sells out quickly. I have a variety in my cellar covering 3 Cuvées but yet to open because of the youth of the wines. Rich without weight or heaviness - easy to love. I would argue no better than Sami Odi at less money for the latter. David Trumper, former Delectable correspondent, was a huge fan of Standish. — 4 years ago

Hoffman Dallwitz Little Wine IV Syrah

My last Little Wine IV. A blend of vintages 2012 2013 and 2014. Ripe plums with a hint of prune - fruit cake aromas. Obviously the product of old vines - entirely from the Hoffman Vineyard apparently. Lush and fluid textures on the palate. Amazing quality for the price. — 6 years ago

Henschke

Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz 2006

Red fruits with touches of raspberry and oak on the nose. On the medium weight palate lovely mouthfilling red fruits - the product of old vines with the trademark silky Henschke medium weight Tannins. Always a wonderful wine. The 2006 has. Short term future up to 5 years more. — 7 years ago

Henschke

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1998

An icon of Australian Red wine. Unfortunately a strong whiff of H2S on the Nose. I have struck this problem previously with also Henschke Mount Edelstone on a couple of occasions. The hallmark of this wine has always been its beautiful supple silky tannins with flavours of plum and raspberry. Tannins totally resolved. The product of a 140 year single vineyard in the Eden Valley. Unfortunately prices these days have gone through the roof. I hope we don’t encounter the H2S in subsequent bottles. — 7 years ago

The perfect example of wine being alive in a bottle; this 1998 vintage continues to evolve, hours after opening. Have patience with this initially coy 21 year old; allow him to find his feet and settle into the year of 2019 before making your final judgements. Opens like Bambi and finishes like a Red Deer. Tobacco, Manuka honey, and stewed raspberries on the nose. Followed with a dense, spicy, fruit cake on the palate. Would love to taste another of the same vintage in 5-years.
