Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2017

Brief Notes. Dark ruby in colour. Aromatics of dark cherry, herbal notes and compost heap (Sous Bois). A medium to full bodied palate. Finishing with silky tannins and a persistent long finish. Could cellar this for another 6 to 10 years. 98 points from James Halliday. — a month ago

Reserve Gippsland Pinot Noir 2021

Mid Ruby red with a lighter rim. Red fruits - cherry and strawberry - some bunchy, Sous Bois notes - not dissimilar to the William Downie last night. Another East Gippsland Pinot (“when in Rome, do as the Romans”). Young but from a good vintage with much promise - more development in the pipeline. A light to medium weight sappy palate with good Gippsland terroir coming through. — 3 years ago

Pinot Noir Old Cellar 2018

This is the entry level Cuvée of about 6 Cuvées of Pinot Noir from Bass Phillip. Under the new ownership of Burgundian, Jacques Fourrier, there appears to be less offered of about 4 judging by the 2019 vintage I just purchased a few weeks ago. This had a touch of cloudiness which is not unusual as they bottle unfiltered which contributes to flavour intensity. This had pronounced strawberry notes on nose and palate. Not particularly complex but fruit driven with note of game and very enjoyable. — 5 years ago

Millstream Baw Baw Shire Chardonnay 2018

Listen, this is super elegant white burgundy vibes with some distant tropicalia that is absolutely enticing. Full disclosure I’ve been out on Patrick’s farm the last few days but oh my god his new stuff is killing it. Statuesque. — 6 years ago

Premium Chardonnay 2017

One of the best Chardonnays I’ve had this year. My last bottle of 2017. Will have to try and remember my notes. On the nose a good combination of citrus and Stone fruit aromas with stone fruit having the slight ascendancy. A rich delicious palate showing increased complexity at nearly 10 years. See previous Delectable notes. Probably at its peak. — 2 months ago

Gippsland Chardonnay 2018

Delectable- this is the Estate Chardonnay not the cheaper Gippsland Cuvée. Restrained initially (more Chablis than White Burgundy) but with air it filled out to be more peachy than citrus. Drinking well at 6 years with another 2 plus years in the tank if desired. This shows that Phillip Jones’s expertise with Pinot extends to Chardonnay. — 2 years ago

Rain Baw Baw Shire Pinot Noir Blend 2019

Incredible as always. I enjoy this style of wine in between light red and rich rosé. Rain is a subtle story. Forest berries compote, white pepper, pomegranate, underbrush and red flowers. Almost perfectly balanced, juicy and delicious. I would drink this wine every day. Casually.

Tasted as part of Mixed Bag Vol. 1.

Gamay 2017

More impressive than the last tasting in August this year. Raspberry, strawberry and other red fruits and a hint of clove. A lovely fresh spicy nose. A light weight plus palate showing sour cherry, muted acid finishing with very fine tannins. Phillip Jones showing his skill with a grape other than Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Good to drink now or in the next 12 months. — 5 years ago

The Estate Pinot Noir 2017

Pale crimson, translucent in colour. Will continue if this is accepted. Aromatics of red cherry, beetroot and Sous Bois. Ripe and rich on the palate. All things considered this is a classic Bass Phillip Estate. Still remains one of Australia’s best Pinot Noirs, now under the control of Burgundian, Jacques Fourrier. This wine was made by the founder, Phillip Jones. — 3 months ago

Reserve Pinot Noir 2009

See previous Delectable Note for the 2009 vintage from 88 weeks ago. Similar tasting note with a nose of Compost Heap, Sous Bois and dirty red and black cherry. Still a strong core of energy - could go on for another 5 years. Arguably Australia’s greatest Pinot Noir - definitely of Grand Cru quality. A lovely textured medium bodied palate. Only 40 dozen made. Philip Jones said at the time that 2009 was one of his best vintages, although to be honest he has made a few just as good, if not better, since. — 3 years ago

Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

My first of 7 bottles from the 2015 vintage and the ultra close planted Issan vineyard of 5 Hectares planted 9000 vines per Hectare. Rich red fruits with bunchy earthy notes. Not quite as impressive as the 2013 vintage (see previous Delectable notes) which Philip Jones called a freak wine. Medium to full bodied. Lots of fine tannins. Have the remaining bottles every year for the next 6 years. I ended up having the last bottle 175 weeks later on 31st May 2025. This wine was best in its youth and did not develop as hoped. This Issan Cuvée not produced any more under the new French ownership. — 4 years ago

Gippsland Pinot Noir 2018

Top pinot
Lots of depth, personality and length of flavor
Crisp like a white and almost as complex as a Burgundian pinot
I am very pleased here
