It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Deep purple in color with a short reddish rim.

Fruity nose of black currants, black plums, light cedar, black tea, tobacco leaf, spices and light chocolate notes.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with black plums, cooked cherries, currants, oak, light licorice, spices, dark chocolates, bitter herbs and peppercorn.

Tangy finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This Merlot from Napa Valley is still very young, but already enjoyable, even by itself. Rich and fruit forward. Nicely balanced and tangy. Showing nice complexity already, tangy and interesting.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 7 to 10 years, and has good potential to become a 93+ point wine.

Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food.

A blend of 78% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 15 months in (40% new) French Oak barrels.

This ancient vineyard (planted from 1888 - 1895) carries roughly 26-29 varieties (who knows…?). The wine usually comprises about 50% of Zinfandel, also quite some Carignan, Mataro, Syrah and Petite Sirah. Furthermore, there are dollops of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Bouschet, Peloursin, Trousseau, Calmette… Just to name a few. The label proudly proclaims that this particular vintage was the 127th (!) year of existence of these vines and 19 different variaties were included in the blend.
When poured in a glass I notice a bright ruby semi-translucent colour with no signs of aging. A beautiful nose of dark fruit (cassis and plum), peppery oriental spice, vanilla, cigar, cedar, toasty oak and a hint of orangepeel.
The palate has sufficient acidity, medium-plus tannines and a long and distinguished finish.
A great wine, drinking at its peak.

2005 WS No. 1 wine of the year and a RP 100 pt rating.....Hmm, was not sure if I should drink or display on my mantle above the fireplace??

1 hour decant (decent chunky/fine sediment). A formidable inky garnet color with a little bricking. On the nose: expressive nose of red cherry, stewed meat, pine, pencil lead, floral, and oak. Taste: A creamy, smooth, rich, elegantly balanced wine with black cherry, little bitter chocolate, cedar, minerals, charcoal, and a earthy plummy long finish. 4% Petite Sirah added, aged in French oak barrels (35% new) for 19 months. Deep Ruby with ripe dark fruit aromas and cacao scents. On the palate flavors of rich cherry and blueberry with notes of vanilla, nutmeg and toasty oak. Fine chalky tannins, well balanced with acidity, long finish ending with fruit and creamy cacao texture. Very nice! — 5 years ago
