The 2018 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character, just as it was from barrel. Sage, blood orange, mocha and spice add pretty aromatic top notes to a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced in this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Bright floral and savory Franc notes punctuate the salivating finish, mineral-drenched finish. The 2018 needs a lot of air to open, but when it does, it is dynamite. Sill tightly wound… several hours decanting required. Strawberries and aged balsamic. Prune, raisin, asphalt, iron, port. Delicious. — 3 years ago
Plum jam, ripe blackberries, and slate notes on the nose. Super fruit forward, light tannins, and smooth finish. There's a lingering dark side there, like sun-dried tomatoes. A decent wine for a great price. $6 at Plum Market — 5 years ago
Dynamite with a polenta board birthday dinner. Just about fully mature. So fragrant. Leather, warm gravel, savory (iodiney) minerals, ripe, rich dark cherry. Rich and balanced in the mouth. Tannins soft and pretty good acids for a ‘15. Concentrated and long. So good. — 2 years ago
Absolutely dynamite ! Ruby red, plum, rich silky tannins. Outstanding — 3 years ago

I’ve enjoyed this producer for a few years (specifically the Felseneck GG) but this is my first experience with their Spatlese Riesling from 2013. Followed over two days.
Next to a ‘22 Clemens Busch Auslese and a ‘22 Kloster Eberbach Baiken Erste Lage Trocken, the richness here was Goldilocks…right down the middle. Not a dynamite vintage, yet I’ve found I traditionally enjoy the Spatlese-level and above sweet wines from cooler vintages as the acid and sweetness play nicely together. Exhibit A. Ripe nectarine and white peach aromatically but also plenty of citrus notes. Lemon-lime and limestone grit dance on the mid-palate before a mineral + honeyed profile bring about an elegantly rich profile complemented by both the classical mineral and sweet Spatlese notes. Crushable at 7.5 ABV!
Enjoyable now and I’m not sure it gets better from here, just different. Consistent over both nights. — 6 days ago
