Château Bazin

Côtes du Marmandais Red Blend 2011

Vintage 2011 | In praise of the cooperatives ☺️ This wine from Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Abouriou was really hard when young. And now after 12 years it reveals its qualities: cherries and spices in smell, smooth velvety taste, very vibrant and still with tannins present. It gives joy. Paired with spaghetti garlic, anchovies and parsley. — 3 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo

As the summer is slipping out of our hands, its time to to pop those complex reds that we’ve been lastning for. Produttori del Barbaresco is considered one of the best cooperatives in the world and its 2016 Barbaresco is a solid proof of that statement.
Restrained at first and needs a couple of hours in the decanter to reach its climax. True to its provenance its clasically crafted, and puts up complex profile of red cherries, rose hip, strawberries, spice, bitter orange and a volatile dried floral lift over a canvas of wet soil.
An offensive approach on the palate with a high acidity and a generous portion of mouth coating tannins that is well accompanied by a pronounced fruit profile with an evolving finish. Very good indeed, but is a couple of level behind to reach the higher tiers.

Rocca Maura

Terra Ancestra Lirac Red Rhone Blend 2006

Vintage 2006 / made from #Grenache #Syrah #Mourvedre with 12 months on new oak barrels. Nice smell that gives more with aeration: spicy, impression of plums and chocolate. Smooth taste with good balance. Les vignerons de Roquemaure near Avignon are one of the impressive ‘cooperatives’ in France. — 8 years ago

Vin Doux Muscat 2014

Rich, deep tropical fruit and honeyed nose with just a hint of smoke. The palate is full and sweet and bursting with fresh acidity. Fresh flavors of peach and apricot lead to a long and sweet but not cloying finish. — 11 years ago

Winzer Krems

Chremisa Grüner Veltliner 2023

Winzer Krems – Grüner Veltliner – Chremisa Edition
Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), Austria 🇦🇹

Overview
Created in 1995 to honor the 1,000-year anniversary of the City of Krems (first recorded in 995 AD), the Chremisa Edition has become a flagship expression of Austrian Grüner Veltliner. It shows why this grape, deeply rooted in Lower Austria, is revered worldwide: structured, spicy, mineral-driven, and endlessly food-friendly.

Aromas & Flavors
Bright aromas of grapefruit, honeysuckle, and orchard blossoms, lifted by Grüner’s signature white pepper note. On the palate, it’s refreshing yet layered, with citrus zest, green apple, and a mineral streak that gives precision and elegance.

Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied, lively, and perfectly balanced. Acidity cleanses and recalibrates the palate, while a subtle spiciness adds dimension. Crisp yet textured, finishing long with finesse.

Winemaking Notes
Produced under the Sandgrube 13 label of Winzer Krems, one of Austria’s most historic cooperatives. Grapes are sourced from vineyards along the Danube with loess and primary rock soils, ideal for showcasing Grüner’s minerality. Stainless-steel vinification preserves freshness and typicity.

Food Pairing
An all-rounder: pairs beautifully with schnitzel, roast chicken, or veal; also great with baked mushrooms, Asian cuisine, or tangy vinaigrette salads. Can be enjoyed as an aperitif or even as a “meditation wine” on its own.

Verdict
A timeless Grüner — layered, spicy, refreshing — bridging Austria’s thousand-year wine heritage with today’s palate.

📚 Educational Sidebar – Austria’s Grüner Legacy
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s signature white grape, covering nearly one-third of all vineyards. Famous for its peppery spice, bright acidity, and food-pairing versatility, it thrives in regions like Kremstal, Kamptal, and Wachau. Look for styles ranging from light “Steinfeder” to powerful, age-worthy “Smaragd” in Wachau classifications.

Quinta do Noval

Over 40 Year Old Tawny Porto

Sampled at Noval's tasting room in Porto, the Noval 'Quarenta Anos' 40 Year Old Tawny is translucent and brickish, replete with developed notes of dates, Dalmatia fig spread, dried apples, aged leather, and warm wicker. In the mouth it's viscous and full, more so than Noval's Colheita, it's the acidity that really brings this Port to life, an arching spine that penetrates through layers of oxidized fruit notes and finely polished tannins. On the finish, dried Zante currants, nut skins. Allspice. 21.5% ABV | Sample — 10 years ago

Mon M
9.1

Inky dark purple, with fragrant, heady aromatics of warm blueberry cobbler, elderberry and black currants. Ripe plum and black raspberry notes are accented with cigar box, crushed herbs and fennel. Power with grace, this wine unfurls like a cherry blossom, revealing layers of blue and black fruit flavors. Cherry, olallieberry, and Zante currant, with truffle, lilac and sandalwood notes are integrated and well structured. Silky, fine grained tannins provide ample support for the voluptuous fruit. Positively sumptuous on the long, generous finish. Lingering cherry, red delicious apple and just a hint of mint display tenacious longevity. — 2 years ago

Adega de Penalva

Dão Vinho Branco 2018

👍🏼
Retail notes,

Perched above the Dão river that snakes its way through granite valleys, the Adega de Penalva is one of the leading cooperatives in the area. The group boasts around a thousand member growers, but it’s important to note that the average holding per member amounts to barely over a hectare. From these small plots they craft simple but delicious wines with a real sense of place. This wine is 40% Encruzado, with 30% Malvasia and 30% Cerceal, hand-harvested, fully destemmed and fermented and raised in stainless steel.
