Beautifully mature-looking but still not fully mature Volnay Santenots, with an expansive, confectionery nose of mid-season cherry, a faint touch of caramelized cherry, desiccated leaves, citrus peel, moss and beautifully precise wet earth. The aromatics are the star, already operating closer to 9.6 or 9.7, with terrific definition and that muscular Santenots character beginning to soften into something more layered and elegant. The palate is concentrated and dense, with excellent inner-mouth aromas, layered tannins and very good freshness, though the tannins became a little more assertive with air before settling back down. Fantastic wine at twenty years old, but still carrying enough structure that I would not call it fully mature. — 2 days ago

“Clos de la Barre” is a lieu dit monopole that has been owned by the Lafon family since 1894.

Opened sometime prior to dinner. The 2018 “Clos de la Barre” pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with apples, pineapple, white flowers, a whiff of matchstick, lemon, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and creamy. A really pretty wine. Perhaps even a little shy tonight. Quality is unquestionably high. Drink now through 2038. — a month ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2018 “Désirée” (which gets to hold this designation due to historical precedence) pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of bright tropical fruit, lemon, slivered almond, warm spices and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ with a lovely texture. Textbook Meursault and more importantly, tasty stuff. Drink now through 2033. — 7 months ago

Nice entry with beautiful mousse. Lime zest, green apple, lemon, white grapefruit w/ pith, pineapple flesh, white nectarines, herbaceous, white spice/ginger, graham crackers, saline, sea fossils, limestone marl, volcanics, chalky bits, yellow flowers & white roses, jasmine, gentle, crisp, acidity with balance for days, mid tension/structure with a smartly polished, elegant finish that lasts 90 seconds that long sets on spice and volcanics. — 5 days ago

On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tropical fruit, lemon drop, freshly struck match, Spring white tree flowers, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+, textured and saline. I thought this benefitted from a lot of air as my last glass was my favorite but this was pretty awesome from the PnP. Medium lemon yellow . Quite closed at first , with some toasted brioche and touch of lemon peel , white flowers, stem ginger , quite rich impression . On the palate this is quite creamy and rounded , candied peel , honey , rich pastries , with quite high mineral tinged acidity . Good long , mineral tinged finish . Needs a bit more time though I don’t get the feeling this will be as profound or as long lived as the 2012. Better in 5 years and will continue to drink well a further 10. — 8 days ago

2006 vintage. Cork easy to extract. A rusty rosé color. Slightly dirty/earthy with light-medium body and still plenty of acidity to shepherd the proceedings along in a timely manner. Excellent depth on the finish and well-integrated perfume in the bouquet. Another solid 5-6 years at this level before any noticeable drop-off. 2.14.26. — 8 months ago
