Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2011

Broke open the magnum when the in-laws visited the apartment for the first time. Was afraid it might be damaged given the length of time I had it and traveled ... But it wasn't. Great oakiness. Thick mouth feel. Deep colour — a month ago

Pinot Noir Rosé 2016

Mount Pleasant Wines

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 2000

In memory of one of Australia’s finest winemakers, Maurice O’Shea, who made memorable, medium weight long living wines in the Hunter Valley in the 1940s and 50s under primitive conditions. This particular wine has departed from medium weight to be reasonably full bodied. Aromas of earth, minerals Spice and chocolate. Also wood Spice notes. Not typically Hunter Valley. A little unbalanced even at 18 years with a slightly bitter finish. Overall a good wine with a while to go yet. — 2 years ago

@Peter van den Besselaar Peter , this wine is big enough to have on its own - perhaps enhanced by a piece of mature Cheddar but the original OShea Wines and the current vintages (2014 one of the best ever) are more medium bodied and probably better wines with food and definitely long lived. Hope you can find some Hunter Valley Shiraz and Semillon where you lived.

@Peter van den Besselaar Peter , the 2014 is the best vintage for decades if you can find it. Mt Pleasant in their wisdom have jacked up the price to $250AUD in their wisdom, which is a pity.

Drayton's Family Wines

William Shiraz 2011

Dense Crimson in colour. The nose and palate on this full bodied red are more reminiscent of a South Australian Red than the medium bodied savoury style typical of the Hunter Valley. Just the faintest hint of HV sweat and earth. This showed rich ripe black currant with smooth tannins. It’s a pity there was a time when HV wines tried to mimic the SA styles which were more popular. This is an example of that. Quite a good wine but not true to its origins. Thankfully the main HV wineries have returned to their original style - think Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea, Brokenwood Graveyard and Tyrells Individual Paddocks. — 15 days ago

Clos Canarelli

Corse Figari Rosé Blend 2017

Fathers Day in style. One of my very favorite wines from anywhere. Clos Canarelli Corse Figare Rose. It’s simply exuberant, but has a fresh, thirst quenching character to it as well. It takes a special bottle to pair with this album which I received as a Father’s Day present. The one and only recording from Michael O’Shea who played a self made 17 strong dulcimer of sorts and was encouraged by members of The The and Wire to record this in the early 80’s. Both have a soulful mystery to them which make for a wonderfully introspective time on an introspective day. I love that my family humors these little obsessions and shares them with me. — a year ago

Giant Steps

LDR Yarra Valley Pinot Noir Syrah 2018

Mid Ruby in colour with a youthful purple tinge. Aromatic red fruits with some stalky peppery notes. On the palate - one word YUM. This is all about primary fruit flavours and freshness and is totally smashable. Barb loved it. This would be a huge hit in Bistros in the capital cities over summer. An unusual blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah pioneered by the legendary Maurice O’Shea in the Hunter Valley back in the 40’s and 50’s. Now being adopted by Giant Steps and other progressive wineries like Yarra Yering. A thoroughly delicious wine. So fresh it’s impertinent!! The 2019 I believe has just been released. — a year ago

I’m drinking the Obsessive Shiraz. Great length, almost star anise with meatiness. Some fruit (red currants?) at the back of the nose, but the initial impression is all protein based. Middle weight pallet, some lovely silkiness and really great length... — 3 years ago
