My newest addition the dog not the wine. Ralphie named after the kid in a "Christmas Story" anyway oh yeah the wine, a mainstay of mine, Matthiason red blend, wonderful in color, acid and fruit balance. — 5 years ago

Pax Mahle Wines

Sonoma-Hillsides Syrah 2016

The ratings below from Steve Matthiason and Raj Parr tell you everything you need to know about this wine. 2 heroes of California wine singing its praises. On Pax’s recommendation I opened one early, I immediately regretted that decision. Not because it’s not good, it is fact VERY good but I wouldn’t come to find that out until I had it open for SIX days. It took that long for the layers and layers of fruit to peel back to reveal the structure underneath. I can only rate now based on day 6, but in 10 years I might be able to go 100pts just like Steve did. — 9 years ago

Del Frisco's

Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

It can be hard to rate wine appropriately when you are enjoying one of the best steaks out there! Lovely evening with family celebrating my wife and father-in-law's birthdays. This is an excellent house wine. This and the Sullivan's private label (Steve Matthiason is the winemaker for Sullivan's...maybe Del Frisco's too?) are without a doubt some of the finest house wines out there. This is a bold cab on the nose and tongue. Probably needs 2-3 years in the bottle to calm down since it's young at '14, but the tannins aren't overpowering. Big integration of oak; doesn't take away from the tart blackberries and candied plum. Lengthy finish. — 10 years ago

Castello di Lispida

Veneto IGT

Wow this was unexpectedly delicious and interesting! Not knowing anything about it, was inspired to order by last week's good experience w the Matthiason white (also a Ribolla blend). Tropical but not sweet, aromatic but not over the top, like a REALLY fun sauvignon blanc. — 10 years ago

Ode to Lulu California Old Vine Rosé Blend 2016

Right time, right place. I think the bottling (Lulu) is a nod to someone at Domaine Tempier. Very light pink hues, a tad fizzy on entry but that dissipates. Primary fruit is strawberry and perhaps watermelon. This isn't as solid as Matthiason, Bandol Domaine Tempier or Liquid Farm for me. I'd rank it with Arnot Roberts. Less weight, simple and fun. — 9 years ago

@Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher the cuvée has lots of ups and downs with vintage but generally is worth buying especially at $20. Like @Bill Bender I usually feel it ranks in a second tier behind Matty or LF. But I've had plenty worse than this.

Just in time for their fall release. I agree with your thoughts. I also thought last years was a little better (more depth).

Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla 2012

@Delectable Wine this is the matthiason 2012 Napa valley ribolla gialla. Oh and it is fantastic. Geebs. Can't think of a more balanced new world, skin-contact right now. Subtly herbaceous, pungently mushroomy. Geebs, yep, geebs. — 10 years ago

Great balance on this entry level from Matthiason. Features the green notes of Cabernet with restrained fruit concentration, ample acidity, and oak spice. Would be great with sirloin or roast beef. — 6 years ago

Greco di Tufo 2015

I'm a sucker for all of the interesting Italian / other varietals Matthiason is doing in Napa, and this is no exception. Nearly orange in the glass, but perhaps only a slight hint of oxidation. This is a powerful white with great acid and a lemony minerally core that goes on for a long finish. — 10 years ago

@Joe Davant This is really a nice minerally wine with good acid. So, it's a somewhat versatile wine to pair, in my view, but top thing that comes to mind is seafood risotto.
