Fontanafredda Solerose Langhe Rosato 2021
Langhe DOC, Piedmont, Italy 🇮🇹
Overview
100% Nebbiolo from Fontanafredda, a historic estate founded in 1858 by the first king of unified Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. Known primarily for Barolo, the winery shows Nebbiolo’s versatility here in a refreshing rosato style.
Aromas & Flavors
Delicate aromas of wild strawberries, fresh raspberries, and rose petals, accented by citrus zest and a whisper of spice. On the palate, juicy red berries meet hints of blood orange and a subtle floral lift, all tied together with Nebbiolo’s hallmark structure.
Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied for a rosé, with lively acidity and a savory edge that makes it more complex than a simple summer sipper. Dry, crisp, and precise with a lingering mineral-driven finish.
Winemaking Notes
Made entirely from Nebbiolo, pressed gently and vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness while showcasing varietal purity. “Solerose” reflects the bright, sunlit character of this bottling.
Food Pairing
Perfect with charcuterie, grilled salmon, tomato bruschetta, or light pasta with herbs. Its balance of fruit and structure makes it versatile for both appetizers and main courses.
Verdict
A serious rosé with pedigree — Fontanafredda turns its Barolo grape into a fresh yet structured pink wine. Elegant, vibrant, and proof that Nebbiolo shines beyond reds.

Absolutely delicious. A little bit of everything. I would hoard this wine if I could. — 3 years ago
Exceptional Alta Langa. I had it with Paola and Flavio at 100Vini in Alba. Nice memories. — 4 years ago
Approachable after 1 hr decant. Cherry-cranberry fruit, hints of black, leathery palate. A little short and it’s not the most complex. But very good now, and for a Barolo you can buy at Costco and open that night, it’s terrific — 3 months ago

Tame is the right word. This Barolo is moving out of its wild youth, but can still age some. Soft fruit and new leather, a little sage. Tannins are mellow, decanted for 2 hours. Paired with pork medallions in a basil cream sauce. Good pairing.

Brought to Tasting Group from my cellar and presented double-blind. In the glass the the wine is a turbid garnet with and orange rim. Some signs of sediment. On the nose, powerful, developed(ing), bruised fruit, red apple, leather, decaying red flowers, forest floor, gym socks, balsamic, and sort of herbaceous too. On the palate, Montmorency cherries, stewed fruits, and desiccated red apples. Grippy! Dry with medium+ acid, medium+ tannin. The finish is long and savory finish. Everyone was in Italy, mostly Piemonte with a couple of Barolo calls and vintages ranging from the late 90’s to the mid-2000’s. This bottle was in a really great place. “Vigna Gattinera” (not to be confused with the Gattinara DOCG) is a vineyard that was planted to Nebbiolo up until the early 90’s when the vines were torn out and it was replanted to Pinot Nero. Today, the grapes for this vineyard now produce Fontanafredda’s Alta Langa. — 4 years ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2004 Lazzarito “Vigna La Delizia” pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and slightly stewed Morello cherry, tar, truffle, dried roses, anise, dried orange peel, talcum powder, old wood and cool spices. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Honestly, one of the more impressive Barolos from Fontanafredda that I’ve had in a while. Drink now through 2044. — 2 months ago
