Monsieur Ètain Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark ruby in color with a reddish/ brick rim.

Nose of blackberries, black currants, cooked cherries, cedar, cola, vanilla, spices, espresso, light herbs, dark chocolates, tobacco, peppercorn, light alcohol and leather.

Full bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black plums, figs, tobacco, cedar, leather, vanilla, licorice, spices, herbs, coffee, chocolates and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Well balanced with a great mouthfeel. Complex and interesting. Elegant, rich and fruit forward.

This 14 year old is drinking very nicely right out of the bottle, and better with air. Tannins show up after 2 hours in the decanter, and bring in nice structure.

Thank you Scott for sharing this with me.

Does not drink like a 14 year old at all, and feels much younger. Will continue to age nicely in the next few years. Feels like it is nearing its peak. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Good by itself or with food. A great sipping wine to have with good friends. This is a gorgeous wine.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in (85% new) French oak barrels for 16 months.

15.2% alcohol by volume.

Very Chambolle like. Red fruits and flowers. Savory and also gamey as well with stunning purity. Lithe and silky. Sweet and deep. Palate is elegant and nimble in a red riesling style. So juicy and sweet with great ripe tannins and lovey elegance and freshness. Gorgeous and so complete. — 4 years ago

Inédite Corbières Syrah Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Inédite, Corbières rouge. Another brilliant wine from this excellent estate. From a plot named "Les Amandiers" with 30 years old vines. A blend of Syrah (50%), Grenache (35%) and Mourvèdre (15%). Aged 18 months in 20 hl and 225 l French oak. Delicate extractions and low yields lead to amazingly refined, fresh and complex wine with velvety tannins and a long spicy finish. Terrific value. Highly recommended. Abv. 14,5%. — 5 years ago

Brotte Barville La Fiole Vintage Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010, France

#AgedWineTuesday

Pretty color of light ruby with a light brick rim.

On the nose prunes, raisins and fresh red berries.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with red cherries, currants, light wood, spices, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs, light earth and peppercorn.

This 15-year-old red blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape feels very young, especially right out of the bottle, with lots of acidity to carry it much further. Complex and interesting. Elegant and rich.

An interesting wine with port-like aromas on the nose and feels very fresh on the palate.

Still young and needs a few hours to open up properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Delicious by itself as a sipping wine and good with food too.

A blend of mostly Grenache with Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault and 4 other local Varietals. Aged in French oak barrels for 10 years. A tiny production of only 900 bottles made.

15% alcohol by volume.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2014

It is time for a delicious Cabernet for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Deep inky in color with a short purple rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, black cherries, cedar, vanilla, spices, chocolates, herbs, light eucalyptus, black pepper, herbs and black tea.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, figs, cedar, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This 8 year old from the great 2014 vintage, is drinking very nicely now. Fruit forward, rich and extracted.

Showing great complexity already, and will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years.

This Single Vineyard is opulent and very smooth. Gorgeous with generous fruit.

Good right out of the bottle and better after an hour of airtime.

A great sipping wine to have with friends. Good by itself and will pair nicely with a big piece of steak too.

Dundee Hills Pinot Noir

This is a great value in Pinot noir. Rounded and smooth, with medium acidity and velvety tannins. There’s some crunchy red fruit to lighten it up, but wild blackberry, Asian five spice, cola, clove and that rich turned earth I get from Dundee hills are all here. The volume is a little turned up, but this was surprisingly very well balanced for a great value. Really enjoyed it. All fruit from their 225 acres of estate Pinot aged in 15% new oak for about a year. — 5 years ago

Marchesi Antinori

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 1981

🏅 Rating 93+/100 (4,35⭐)

Tasted from magnum.

Ruby color with tawny hue showing the age. First nose has a slight touch of iron. Fruit is ripe and sweet. Vegetable scent of tomato stems suggesting presence of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sandy tannins of Sangiovese. Amazing how bottle aging makes the wine so smooth and satin.

Mostly tertiary aromas, but very well holding the age and could last for at least 5 more years without any signs of decline

Elegant expression of famous Tignanello.

1981 was outshadowed by great 1982. It was 10th anniversary vintage and is considered a very fine one.

Key oenological data:
Average sugar content of grapes at harvest 21.00%
Average total acidity of the grapes 7.80%
Alcohol content after fermentation 13.00
Average fermentation temperature 28C
Length of fermentation 13 days
Acidity of wine after malo 5.90
Ageing in 225 litre barrels 20 months
Bottle ageing in our cellars 18 months

======
I have published the article with a story of Tignanello, the emblematic SuperTuscan wine from Antinori.

\- What were the key factors of its success?
\- What makes this wine stand out from many other wines form Tuscany?

Best enjoyed with a glass of Tignanello.

Hendricks Wines

Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2014

Somm David T
9.5

Charles strikes again.

I said weeks ago, I’d rather drink Charles Hendricks Pinot in futures @ $75 vs. the 09 Marcassin we had two weeks back @ $150+ winery or $225+ on the secondary market. This 14, while still young, proves that point and will only continue to get better.

It’s about as luxurious as Ca Pinot gets. Just supple, soft & elegant as body gets. Candied, floral fruits of ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, blue fruits, lean purple fruits, dry cranberries, strawberries, plums, delicate but darks spices, cinnamon stick, vanillin, nutmeg & touch clove, salted caramel, mocha powder, limestone & grey volcanics, dry crushed rocks hints of peppered grilled meats, fresh & dry tobacco, dry stems/twigs, sage dominated dry Provence herbs, splash of mint/eucalyptus, tree sap with bright candied, fresh & slightly withering florals of; dark, red, purple, blue set in a field of violets & some lavender. The acidity is perfect. The long finish is; extremely well balanced & polished, elegant, fresh, just the right amount of candied with a long, dark spice finish in the long set.

The 14 really started to excel after an hour plus in the decanter.

Photos of; the outside of the Hope & Grace tasting room in downtown Yountville where you will find Charles Hendricks wines. He makes Hope & Grace wines as well. One of my favorite paintings that used to sit behind their tasting bar but, is now in Charles house. It is very Pollock like! Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Not showing much age.

Beautiful nose of blueberries, blackberries, plums, cooked cherries, spices, licorice, cedar, earth, chocolates, vanilla, rhubarb and black pepper.

Medium plus in body and soft, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cherries, toast, cedar, light vanilla, mediterranean spices, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia. Rich and elegant. Fruit forward and complex. Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Spicy and entertaining.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 60 minutes of airtime.

This 20 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is drinking beautifully now. Showing a gorgeous nose, that I kept on smelling for a while.

Feels much younger than it actually is, complex and well balanced.

Good right out of the bottle with grippy tannins, and better after a couple of hours in the decanter.

Failla

Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir

Couldn't find entry, logging Stella Sonoma Coast Pinot 2017 here: 225 and Calera clones. Elevated acidity, med tannins. Cola nuts, faint herbs, red plums, blackberry, med+/elevated concentration, overripe strawberry, black tea bag, lavender, tomato, stony characters. ~13% abv. 2017 was super hot in Sonoma, >100 degree heat spikes in June-July cause vines to shut down, rapid ripening more akin to Oregon of erratic growing season (whereas usually California boasts of constant long growing season). Gravel loam soil. 10-40% whole cluster, hand punchdowns, stem inclusion. Foot treaded. WC raises pH as high acid -> more stem inclusion to balance the pH. Failla picks on pH at ~23-24 Brix which would be a bit too high. — 4 years ago

Ziereisen

Tschuppen Spätburgunder 2016

From Baden at Swiss border, hand-picked Pinot Noir grown on lime stone, fermented with natural yeasts and with 22 mo aging in 225 liter barrels. Red lightly viscous unfiltered; nose of ripe strawberries, chocolate, and earthy sulphury spicy notes - the good kind; although low on alcohol (12%) the taste is satisfying, has ample acids, and is carried into a long finish on the back of straw- and lingon-berries and a touch of oak-spices. — 5 years ago

Molino Real

Mountain Wine Málaga Moscatel 2016

Before phylloxera wiped out its vineyards, Málaga was considered one of Europe’s greatest wine regions and its legendary “mountain wines” were coveted throughout the world. In his memoirs, Hugh Johnson singled out an 1830s “mountain wine” bought at a Christie’s auction under the label Molino del Rey as the best wine he’d ever drank - and he’s had plenty. Taking its inspiration from Johnson’s account, Telmo Rodríguez’s Molino Real represents a groundbreaking effort to revive Málaga’s winemaking traditions and to explore the region’s potential for top quality sweet wines.

A “vino naturalmente dulce” or naturally sweet wine (not to be confused with Málaga’s also famous “vino dulce natural” a fortified style developed later in the 18th Century), Molino Real is made with Muscat of Alexandria grapes from 9 hectares of vines on steep slate slopes in Cómpeta in the Axarquía region. The grapes were sun dried - a process known as asoleo - to increase sugar concentration, fermented in 225-liter oak barrels and then aged for 20 months.

Sumptuous, exuberant nose. Flowers, orange blossom, and peach (actually peach yogurt). Balanced, not overwhelmingly sweet. Delicious!
