Prapò Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Prapò may not be particularly well known but its location in Serralunga d’Alba, directly below Cerretta, should be a good indication of its quality and potential. That being said, there are only a half dozen producers making Prapò today.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2020 pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with a mix of tart and ripe, predominately res fruits: raspberries, Maraschino cherries, strawberry, along with whole peaches, roses, green herbs, stony minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. The orchard peach character shows a bit more prominently here while the rest of the palate seems a bit taciturn, maybe even austere. The finish is medium+. Quite a treat, if not a touch cerebral. Drink now with patience through 2040.

Château Villemaurine

St. Émilion Grand Cru Classé Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. Another fine effort from Villemaurine. This was still made under the Justin Onclin reign, since 2021 Villemaurine is owned by the Lefevere family. — 24 days ago

Domaine Gramenon

La Sagesse Côtes du Rhône Grenache 2019

Very dark purplish rubi robe, nose of dark cherries, sweet spices and blackcurrant. Medium bodied, rich but light on its feet after 2 hours decanting. This is top notch stuff and highly recommended. — 25 days ago

The 2015 showed some nice integration. The fruits, earth and floral’s were in harmony and just entering its drinking window.

Château La Dominique

Grand Cru Classé St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

Opaque red blue. Vegetal and floral aromas with muddled blueberry. Medium plus bodied, medium plus alcohol. Blueberry emerges more prominently on the palate. Unbelievably smooth, round and well integrated. So complete. Tannins are perfect here, just enough to cut the beef tallow and provide an enjoyable finish. I can only imagine this will get even better, but why wait. This is near the top of my historical scale.
