Premiere Mise Beaujolais Gamay 2023

Premiere Mise is sourced from Yvon’s oldest vines from the Cercillon plot in Fleurie, another legendary "V.V." bottling. Only bottled “Beaujolais” because it's above 500m elevation and some dumb rules for the Fleurie AOC.

Poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service and enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2023 “Premier Mis” pours a hazy, deep ruby with a translucent core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. The nose? Well…it’s sensational (with just enough funk to remind you this is Metras): gorgeous, lifted notes of red brambles, red plum, mixed flowers, licorice, a whiff of horse blanket, dried herbs and granitic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. A stunning Metras; a wine you think about for days after. A totally awesome pairing with the roasted duck. Drink now through 2038? Thanks for the assist

Le Printemps Fleurie Gamay 2011

This is fantastic. Just dusted granite at first but following the fruit and pure country smells develop beautifully: dew on the trees, fresh picked berries, manure. Piercing tart cherry and sour, mashed, fermenting fruit, and floral scents. Then the palate has the sweetness of cherry candy. Anise. Nutmeg. Long flavors. Completely transparent, all the sediment has settled out. Just beautiful. This is how natural wine should be. — 4 years ago

Dark fruited and brooding - atypical for the village but delicious nonetheless. Not unlike a Oregon example. — 4 months ago

Madame Placard Beaujolais Gamay 2020

Glorious Beauj raspberry strawberry. Very much Beauj but it also has an earthy not hidden in there. Elegantly balanced as well. Right when opened a lot was going on. It smells like stems. I like that. Another Beauj to go on the rotation for things to look for when it comes out. — 3 years ago
