I am amazed that sitting with this wine this weekend actually showed better than from a 1.5L several years ago. Glorious in all of its unctuous splendor, the 2003 Chateau Coutet is one of the great wines made this vintage. The balance mid-palate is incredible, as is the unctuous texture. Rich vanilla creme brulee, butterscotch and roasted pineapple tones combine with minerals, and sour mango on the palate. With serious weight and verve, this is really singing now at the seventeen year mark and will continue to provide drinking enjoyment at least for another decade. Drink 2020-2032- 96 — 4 years ago
The 2016 Chateau Climens is a head-turning blend made by the talented Bérénice Lurton, who has managed this property since 1992. 100% Semillon, this golden hued wine shows an exotic aromatic display, offering apricot jelly, pineapple upside down cake, butterscotch and shades of toasted hazelnut the all mingle together on the nose. Showing a glorious combination of tension and viscosity, the 2016 Climens shows incredible length and elegance despite its obvious power. Rich lemon creme brulee, vanilla cream, and orange marmalade flavors combine with a bright sense of minerality and a light salinity. The seamless quality of the wine is remarkable. Simply glorious now in its youth, this scintillating new release will have an exceedingly long life in the cellar. Drink 2026-2050- 98 — 5 years ago
Golden , orange tinged centre , lemon yellow rim . Very aromatic, clementines, orange rind , saffron , creme brûlée , caramel. On the palate rich and intense but with very good balance from fresh acidity . Orange syrup , saffron creme brûlée with a slight burnt caramel touch on the finish . Long and powerful , this is ready but will carry on at this level for another 10-20 years — 2 months ago
1.5 hour decant(decent chunky cloudy sediment). An imposing inky purplish garnet color. On the nose: A beautifully expressive nose with sweet blackberry, currant, anise, smoke, floral, chocolate creme brulee. Taste: Wow! Had to buckle my seat belt...elegant , rich wine with dark cherry, spice, charcoal, earthy, leading to a cocoa cedar Dry long finish. Firm tannnis.....this powerful (15% alc) still coiled wine wants 3-4 more years to start showing its best and a better score to come!!! Cheers! — 4 years ago
Ridge,2002, California Monte Bello. Color- dark red purple with slight bricking. Nose—dark blue/red fruit and perfume spice-raisin and creme brûlée throughout with a mint scent lingering. A fantastic luscious feel in the mouth bursting of dark cherry flavors, with some earthy spices, cedar and soft coffee mocha grounds, the sweetness from the creme brûlée is subtlety throughout. A long finish but flavors are restrained and tannins are integrated but not totally resolved giving this wine a definite opportunity to age more. Can’t wait to try in a year or two! — 4 years ago
1 hour decant(lots of chunky/fine sediment). A brooding dark garnet with a little bricking. On the nose: dark cherry, tobacco, eucalyptus, creme de cassis, graphite. Taste: a silky, rich, powerful but elegant wine with dark cherry/blackberry, gravel, cedar, dark chocolate, licorice, and a smokey herbaceous long finish that goes on and on. YUM!! What a treat to drink tonight. — 2 years ago
A 2021 check-in on this bottle today, still holding well to prior notes:
Nose has lightly oxidized yellow apple, under-ripe papaya, pineapple core, cold butter and dry sandstone.
Palate has ripe pineapple core, lemon zest, (light) vanilla creme, pear puff pastry, yellow apple peel with slightly sweet notes to the medium finish.
Decanted 4H. — 4 years ago
It’s official - happy 40th @deked1! Wine is deep ruby hue, heavy tearing. Creme de cassis, molasses, pipe tobacco, nutmeg and baking spices, vanilla and oak. Pop and pour variety, fruit and oak forward. Velveteen texture.
