La Bastide Saint-Dominique

Secrets De Pignan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache 2017

2017: Well-rated, very good CDP that features darker stewed fruit flavors and a good amount of port and earth nuances. While it suffers a typical CDP lack of acidity and vibrancy at this stage the fruit concentration makes this an above-average bottling and complements the growing complexity. Good value at $52 (VR). — 6 months ago

Brancaia

Ilatraia Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

2016: Excellent Cab-based Super Tuscan, already drinking well with air. Big, mouth-filling blackberry fruit balanced with stone, leather and acidity. Concentrated but so smooth. Love the 2012 - this 2016 will probably be better over time $55 at VR and NJFW. — 3 years ago

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2018

2018: Young but lots of inky purple fruit with good concentration. Tannins are well-integrated for such a young wine but will need time to become more than just fruit. Some mineral backing gives some hope for some more funky Rotie flavors but will take some years. $56? At VR. — a year ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

2015: Excellent Brunello, hitting its prime now. $58 at VR. — 2 years ago

Valpolicella Superiore Corvina Blend 2013

2013: Classic Vallpolicella, a “half Amarone” ripasso. Dense, inky, mouth-coating, full-bodied without too much sweetness and with some barnyard funk. I only wish it had a bit more grip: was more enjoyable early on when the tannins were more evident. Could be a function of the good-but-not-great vintage, but I slightly prefer Quintarelli for this kind of pocket change ($95, VR). — 2 years ago
