Opened about an hour before service. The 2016 Terre Nere (Campigli Vallone) Brunello di Montalcino pours a deep garnet with a slightly brownish rim. No signs of sediment. On the nose, this is very expressive and unabashedly Italian with funky red and dark fruits, black tea, dried green herbs, licorice. On the palate, oh yes…the wine is bone dry with medium++ tannin and medium+ acid. The structure is stunning. There’s loads on character on the palate too with ripe and wisened cherries, orange curaçao, dry earth, and dried herbs. The finish is long and immensely satisfying. Terre Nere Campigli Vallone Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2018: Medium bodied. Perfect balance between tannins & acidity. Fruity youthful taste. Bright fresh notes of red fruits; additional tobacco, herbs & spice. Dry soft finish. Overall, high QPR for this Montalcino Sangiovese; a great vintage even though it’s a younger & lighter Rosso but it can easily compete with more expensive Brunellos! Highly recommend. Basilica Caffaggio is one of the more famous producers located in the Western Sector of Chianti Classico’s Panzano UGA; specifically the middle elevation band of San Martino in Cecione (approx. 300m elevation). The geology is largely shale.

Popped and poured. The 2018 Caffaggio Chianti Classico pours a bright ruby color with a transparent core and a slightly watery rim; medium viscosity. No obvious staining of the tears and no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is intense. Funky cherry, red flowers, dried earth, bergamot, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry and structure is medium+ across the board. The fruits and non-fruits are confirmed with loads of minerals; there is a long savory finish. A very nice Chianti Classico that fits the bill. Drink now or over the next 10 years. — a year ago
