Medium ruby color with a slight orange rim. Aromas of sour red fruits, coffee beans and a hint of orange zest. Flavors of red cherries, wild strawberries, roasted vegetables, dark chocolate and black licorice. Touch of salinity on the long and earthy finish. Popped and poured; consumed over two days. On Day 1, giving new meaning to “Riserva”, the 2013 Terre Nere Riserva was quite shy with hints of tart cherry and earth but that’s about it. However, I could tell that underneath the shell, there was a wine of tremendous substance…but it was going to need some time to get comfortable with its surroundings. We finished our glass and placed the cork back in the neck of the bottle to revisit the next day. Day 2 aaaaand here we go! Bright cherries, dried green herbs, bergamot, black tea, dusty earth, Asian spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with tannins in the medium+ category and acid following suit. The notes from the nose are confirmed on the palate. The finish is long and savory. And the texture: silky smooth. This is a gorgeous Brunello that’s packed with depth but needs patience to realize it’s true form. I expect a long life yet ahead. — 3 years ago

Basilica Caffaggio is one of the more famous producers located in the Western Sector of Chianti Classico’s Panzano UGA; specifically the middle elevation band of San Martino in Cecione (approx. 300m elevation). The geology is largely shale.

Popped and poured. The 2018 Caffaggio Chianti Classico pours a bright ruby color with a transparent core and a slightly watery rim; medium viscosity. No obvious staining of the tears and no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is intense. Funky cherry, red flowers, dried earth, bergamot, and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry and structure is medium+ across the board. The fruits and non-fruits are confirmed with loads of minerals; there is a long savory finish. A very nice Chianti Classico that fits the bill. Drink now or over the next 10 years. — 3 years ago

Opened about an hour before service. The 2016 Terre Nere (Campigli Vallone) Brunello di Montalcino pours a deep garnet with a slightly brownish rim. No signs of sediment. On the nose, this is very expressive and unabashedly Italian with funky red and dark fruits, black tea, dried green herbs, licorice. On the palate, oh yes…the wine is bone dry with medium++ tannin and medium+ acid. The structure is stunning. There’s loads on character on the palate too with ripe and wisened cherries, orange curaçao, dry earth, and dried herbs. The finish is long and immensely satisfying. A killer wine with a long life ahead. Drink now with some patience and through 2036 — 3 years ago

This was interesting - if served blind I would have thought it to be a French blend of Sauvignon Blanc with vermentino or rousanne - very aromatic, medium acids and a decent finish. I believe this was a local Salento wine so nice to see that they can retain aromas and acidity in such a dry mediterranean climate. — 3 years ago
