The Low

Piña Cellars

Low Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Though Piña Cellars is renowned for its powerful reds, this small-production Chardonnay from the Low Vineyard proves they know their way around white wines, too. Grown next to the famed Muir-Hanna Vineyard, the same fruit once used in Montelena’s legendary 1976 Paris Tasting Chardonnay, this wine is something truly special.

Quite different from the classic California butter-bomb, this bottling leans into elegance and precision. The nose opens with layers of honeysuckle, orchard fruits, brioche, and subtle spice. On the palate, white peach, apricot, and pear dance with delicate hints of hazelnut, all wrapped in a creamy, full-bodied texture.

Mouthfeel is plush and satiny, yet lifted by a refreshing acidity that keeps it vibrant through a long, graceful finish.

Still youthful, but showing beautifully now, this Chardonnay has the structure to age and evolve for years. A true showstopper, and a rare gem from a producer that usually flies under the Chardonnay radar. ✨🍐🥂

This one surprised me. Good right out of the bottle. Delicate fruit notes and an excellent balance of tanins and sweetness. Low acidity and very easy drinking but did not get boring. Very good wine. — 10 months ago

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2015

Pretty damn Burgundian effort here. Sappy cherry fruit, almost cherry liqueur-like, forest floor, crushed rock, a little baking spice. Intense yet nearly weightless in the mouth. Tannin resolved, great acids. Surprisingly low alcohol (12.4%). Very nice. — 5 years ago

18 meses Jumilla Monastrell Blend 2015

Tried 6mos ago. Began 1916, Juan Gil Giménez, great-grandfather of present generation, built winery in heart of Jumilla. Blue label spent 18 months in new oak (wine formally known as 18 mos representing time in bottle, now “Blue Label.” Monastrell, Cab Sauv & Syrah blend (60/30/10), low yield, aromas of red berry and toasty oak. Palate shows flavors of dark berry fruits, espresso, cacao and hints of sweet spice. Big dusty tannins, well integrated with oak, lingering, well balanced. Aged well, still going! — 5 years ago
