McDougall Ranch Pinot Noir 2018

A really attractive medium ruby in the glass with thin, purple edges. Right out of the gate, you can smell the stemmy character of the wine. Plenty of herbs and characteristic Pinot underbrush happening here. Really pretty floral notes come in and really take things to a new level. Red cherries, raspberries, and muted wild strawberries. A nice bit of spice and smoke wafts from the glass after a little air. On day 2, this holds up quite well with a little light chocolate and more expressive fruit.

100% whole cluster fruit and tiny production. Medium bodied and all natural in every way. Purity of fruit is high here and this is a very terroir driven Pinot. Blessedly low alcohol at 13.5 and showing nice balance at this age, even though this is definitely one to cellar. The palate follows the nose with fresh red fruit and spice up front. More savory notes come through as it grows in the glass. One of my favorite Pinots of this year, easily.

For me, classic Hirsch vineyard Chard … clean, crisp, med-weight, touch of matchstruck reduction with a finish that scratches my itch and goes on forever. Ripe, juicy pear and lean crisp apple. I buy my allocation every year and go light on the pinots. For my money, this is year to year a star on the Sonoma Coast…kudos to David and the entire Hirsch family. — 3 days ago

2019 vintage. Soft nose currently but explosive front-end palate of bleached white paper, massive plum, balsamic and bacon fat. Hevvy bod. Some welcome acidity/tannins on the back end clean(s) things up nicely. Waay too young but not shy about trying out for the varsity squad. Makes you wonder where we would be if Napa/Sonoma had put as much time, effort and acreage into Syrah as they have Cabernet Sauvignon over the last six decades... — 3 days ago

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2019

Surprisingly bright on the nose with pear and apricot hints. Upon first sip I’m hit with a big pineapple juice flavor. The texture however is only mildly buttery and quickly gets tannic and thinner that’s reminiscent of a sweet lemonade, fading into fun note of lemon Starburst. Finish get sweet like cotton candy grapes while I get some honeysuckle on the exhale. All in all a great treat from a friend! — 8 days ago

Dark purple and ruby out of the bottle. Solid fruit and damp leaves on the nose. Deep and bright with many layers that opened over a 2-3 hour decant. Great balance of fruit, acid and a deeply tannic finish. Drink now, or see what happens in 5-10 years. Can’t go wrong. — 12 days ago
