Single Vineyard Eden Valley Shiraz 2015
I'm assuming this is the Lamella. For me, this stood out among Dan's three wines. Exotic, with a good dose of spice. GW sums this up pretty well:
Hand-picked from the Stonegarden Vineyard (planted 1858) in the far south eastern hills of the Eden Valley. I’m not sure Eden Valley Shiraz gets much better than this. Black fruits, black pepper and exotic spice, sage and aromatic herbs, BBQ snags, floral top notes. Full bodied, incredible density and depth to the fruit, black fruits with a subtle mintiness, all that spice and mouth-perfume, then sheets of silky ultra-high pixel tannin, cool acidity, and superb length, with a cascade of nourishing tannin to farewell. John Duval Wines
Eligo Barossa Valley Shiraz
Powerful but with grace. Typical 2012 Barossa. Mr John Duval has producer a good wine. Structure, deep core fruit. Needs time, slightly closed. Purple dark inky colour. Plum, blackcurrant and vanilla are prominent. Chocolate with great acidity. Length of flavour falls short for me . I don't think this is in the same league as Standish or Sami Odi. Lacked X-factor. I love Dan Standish. He is one of the best winemakers. Lovely wine, very young. Blueberry and Red silky fruit. Full Bodied but not overly alcoholic, heat isn't obvious in this wine. 3/6.5/9.5 = 19 out of 100 say 96.
High quality Barossa Shiraz with an awesome bouquet apparent as soon as it’s released from the bottle (though I always think blending Viognier is cheating in that regard). Still a strong tannin/acid structure so still not at its peak - say 5 years more at least. High alcohol content but integrated perfectly - didn’t even notice. Really pleasant long linger. Standish is an artist so you must collect and try. My next move is to try back to back with a Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 — 21 days ago
