Château Hauteville

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Here is my #MerlotThursday for this week. A nice one from Bordeaux.

Dark ruby in color with a short, cloudy, reddish rim.

Fruity nose of plums, cherries, licorice, oak, vanilla, spices, chocolates, cloves, herbs, graphite, earth, light vegetables and black pepper.

Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, cloves, spices, licorice, peppercorn, earth, graphite and dark coffee.

Medium plus in finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a nice, yet young, Merlot Cabernet blend from Saint Estephe. Showing nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.

Needs a couple of hours to open up properly. Starting to show the tannins after 60 minutes of airtime. Needs 5 years in the bottle to mature, but already drinking very nicely.

Feels like a blend of left and right bank. Nice and engaging.

I paired it with cheeses, crackers and fresh fruit.

A blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Kosher.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$50.

9.5

Stellar nose. Smoke, leather, truffle, bbq, super mineral, mint, forest floor, cassis, mineral, so clean, loads of cedar and pine, palate is even a bit young. So juicy and complex. Mineral and fresh. Big tannic spine. Complex and long. Can still use some age. Gorgeous now. — 2 days ago

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

This was another 01 that is drinking well, still youthful, showing more black fruits than red with earth, leather, tobacco & mineral. — 7 days ago

Drank 10/9/19

Classic right bank nose opens with plums, earth, some cassis, and just a hint of cedar. Velvety black fruit leather, and a touch of green from the cab franc, with medium, well integrated tannins lend support to the medium+ body. A well made wine from a good producer, in an average vintage.

Nose of black fruit, sweet pipe tobacco, and purple flowers. Sweet black fruit, tobacco, and medium, well integrated tannins on the palate. Long finish. An earlier drinking style, but could also age for many years.
Decanted 3 hours.

1hr decant. Lovely nose of earth and tar. Wine lacks depth and fruit, but does have some nice Bordeaux elements. There is even some teriyaki sauce, which I know is weird. Short finish. Wish this packed more of a punch! — 10 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

It’s time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a nice one from Napa Valley.

Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, cherries, currants, oak, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco leaf, light alcohol, graphite, earth, leather, dark coffee and black pepper.

Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with plums black currants, stewed cherries, cedar, leather, earth, vanilla, licorice, light vegetables, pencil lead, peppercorn and dark chocolate.

Long finish with fine, yet firm, tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a very tasty Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Showing nice complexity and a great mouthfeel. Spicy and elegant.

Good by itself or with food. A nice sipping wine.

Still young and needs another 5 years in the bottle to mature properly. Needs a couple of hours to open up, so give it some time.

This has a good potential to get to 94+ points, but not right now. However it is already enjoyable even by itself.

If you like a big, yet restraint red, this one is for you.

I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

A blend of 99.35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 0.5% Petit Verdot and 0.15% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 25 months in 100% new French Oak barrels. A small production of only 103 cases.

14.8% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Wine still a great example of true Bordeaux finesse, this with some sentimental flashbacks to 1986 made this a great moment. — 3 days ago

Le Dôme Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Too bad I can't score 1/2 points! And both the 2008 and 2010 about 2 years ago. The 2008 seemed to be very shut down, with the 2010 being the polar opposite. This one was definitely more along the 2010 side of things, and wish I could give this one a 94.5. This is St Emilion wine with a tuxedo. Rounded structure, kind of becomes more brambly and tobacco driven towards the finish. Very polished, very open. And with its huge structure, you can hold this one for a while. I think I have one more 2008 left, but I would trade it in a heartbeat for one of these. — 17 days ago
