Very enjoyable Wednesday Wine Committee lunch today with @Weston Eidson & @Colby Siratt hosting. Same format as always...1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert wine all tasted blind.

This producer was new to me. Loved it! The nose has such dark fruit wrapped in smoked/chargrilled meats. Not overly savory and zero funk, but just a killer mesh of sweet and savory. Tobacco, graphite, cassis up front with a finish of blackberry pie, leather, and herbs de Provence. This could be a wonderful wine in 7-10yrs. I called this left bank 2012 vintage.

Château Calon-Ségur

Monthly WTF guys blind tasting group. This month was our annual, and famed, Left Bank vs Right Bank theme. All wines served blind as usual. Started off with a Rosé and a champagne. Great night.

This was my contribution. Someone else brought a ‘96 Calon Segur and it seemed to just be entering its drinking window, so needless to say, even at 13yrs old (with a 3hr decant), this was young. The nose was full of saddle leather, herbs de Provence and underripe red and black fruits. The palate showed bayleaf and cherry swisher sweets (a note I seem to get often with St Estephe wines with age). A touch thin at the front, full on the mid palate and tart and tannic in the finish. Tons of acidity here as well. Unless you’re double decanting for 6+ hours, I’d hold another 5 years.

I really enjoyed this. Haven’t had any wines from this producer before. The aromatics covered the entire fruit spectrum (red, blue and black) alongside nutmeg and birch wood. Full bodied...fig, tar, baking spices on the palate. Delicious now. I called this ‘10 Right Bank.

Les Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estéphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

This is a great Left Bank Bordeaux.

Showing black fruits with earth, chocolates, tobacco, spices, peppercorn, graphite, dark coffee, bell pepper, oak, vanilla, black pepper and black tea.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and nice legs.

Great nose with nice complexity.

Dry and fruity on the palate. Nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.

A Great vintage with lots of fruits and drink very nicely now.

Could age very well in the next 20 years.

Good length on the finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. Wine Advocate 93 points.

14% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$75.

Domaine des Gourdins

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Time for #MerlotThursday. This is a nice Right Bank Bordeaux.

Showing red and black fruits with earth, chocolates, wood, earth, bell pepper, spices, vegetables, cedar, leather, wet leaves, herbs and peppercorn.

Full bodied and bold with medium acidity and nice legs.

Dry on the palate and earthy with nice complexity. A good food wine.

Needs 2 hours to open up properly and show some tannins.

Still young and needs 5 to 10 years of bottle time. Not from a great vintage, and it is showing.

Had it blind and called it correctly, including the vintage. Love it when that happens 😉

A blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc.

13% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$25.

The most soft and plush wine of the night. I’d enjoy these soon as there isn’t a lot of acidity, or tannin, at this 5yr mark. Very ripe. Jammy/fruit forward...fresh squeezed blueberries and blackberries on the nose. Sweetened plum, bacon fat, boysenberry jam notes on the palate. I called this ‘14, Left Bank, St Julien. Thanks

@Shay A , Bernard Magrez owns several estates in Bordeaux and around the world. His most famous is probably Chateau Pape Clement. I think he may bottle some Napa wine as well. Cheers.

La Grange Neuve de Figeac

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Had this with the filet served on our last leg of flying home on Emirates.

This is Figeac’s second wine. Starting with the 2012 vintage going forward, this wine was renamed Petit Figeac.

The nose reveals, soft, slightly muted; blackberries, black cherries, black plum skin, plum, black raspberries & floral purple fruit mix. There’s a good presence of well layered baking spices; cinnamon, soft clove & nutmeg, vanilla, mocha powder, light caramel, dark cola currants, dry clay & top soil, dry stones, sandstone minerals, leathery notes, hints of graphite, anise, dark rich soil, fruit tea with dark red, purple flowers with violets that are slightly withering.

The body is not quite full with dry, fine earthy tannins. The mouthfeel is warm and ripe. It shows beauty & elegance. The structure, soft tension, length and balance reveal the quality of the 09 vintage. Ripe; blackberries, black cherries, black plum skin, plum, creamy black raspberries & floral purple fruit mix. Nicely layered baking spices; cinnamon stick, soft clove & nutmeg, vanilla, mocha powder, light caramel, dark & milk chocolate, dark cola currants, dry clay & top soil, dry stones, powdery, dry crushed rocks, sandstone minerals, cedar, leathery notes, hints of graphite, fresh, soft tobacco, anise, dark rich soil, fruit tea with dark red, purple flowers with violets, lavender that are fresh and slightly withering. The acidity is round excellent. The long finish is good but still needs five or more years to further integrate and soften. It shows a somewhat earthy dominance over fruit. but, it’s still very nice and persistent for minutes. 91 now and room for two to three points more down the road.

If you can still find this at a reasonable price, buy it. It’s going really beautiful in five more years.

Photos of; Chateau Figeac, my Emirates filet, which actually pretty good considering it was airline prepared, both sides of their lounge in Business Class.

Out of the four reds, this changed the most in the glass. Very floral and pretty. Sweetness tobacco, black cherries, and an herbal finish. Potpourri too. I called this right bank post 2010 vintage. Youthful for sure.
