Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Those classic Leoville-Barton feminine stylings. Light/light-medium body. Delicate and soft but with enough concentration to do the usual LB dance...gliding along for decades with almost imperceptible drop off/loss. There are going to be a bunch of WS readers that pick this up and find themselves disappointed since it never plays the heavy and expected. Embrace the subtle side of life. — 7 days ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Le Marquis Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. Already actively managing the big balancing act of fruit, tannins/acidity and body…and it’s a baby! If the second label is drinking this well, gotta get my hands on some of the mothership juice from this vintage. Classic Bordeaux and a ripping QPR tambíen. — 8 days ago

Château Haut Coteau

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

I was previously unfamiliar with this producer but they appear to be rather small by Bordeaux standards. The 2016 Haut Coteau pours a deep purple with medium viscosity. On the nose, medium intensity, with cassis, earth, plums, tobacco, baking spice. On the palate, again dark tart fruits with earth and wet stone. Quite a lot of structure here with medium+ tannin and acid. The finish is long and bitter…a touch green to be honest…but this is really fairly classic Saint-Estèphe and I actually think another 5-10 years will be quite kind to this bottle. — 14 days ago

Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

A blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cab Franc &10% Cab Sauv, aged in 60% new oak, deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruit with cedar & spice. On the palate flavors of ripe dark berry fruits, cacao, tobacco and espresso notes. Well balanced, perfect tannins, a joy to drink, starting to open but cellaring will only add to a better tasting experience! — 4 days ago

Clos Fourtet

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

John W

Dark ruby coloration. On the nose, cherry, dark berry, florals, smoked citrus peel, espresso and chocolate. On the palate, rich, full bodied, cherry, dark berry, leather, chocolate, minerals/salinity, citrus peel, hints of grapefruit or blood orange. Long finish. The citrus peel lingers. Like forever. Layered and complex. $110 at B-21. — 6 days ago

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Yum. So balanced, so addictive. Easy dark red fruit upfront with a smooth small grained tannins and white pepper creating a silky but penetrating finish that lingered. Shared it with my mother in law who says she doesn’t care what wine she drinks….but why did she ask me for more so quickly??? — 4 days ago

Château Fleur Cardinale

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

2016 vintage. World-class nose of panini sando bread/grilled pain au levain, lavender, molasses, bruised plum and wine-country kitchen. Dark as a moonless night. Medium-heavy/heavy body with a brooding, hide-and-seek, mid-palate presence. Slightly spicy finish. Needs a half-decade to come grooving up slowly. Steel yourself to treat this with more patience than most but not as much as some. If opening soon, decant for at least two hours. — 6 days ago

Château Chantecaille Clauzel

Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

See previous note which was my longest ever Delectable note. This wine has such an interesting story. Virtually unknown and surrounded by Right Bank royalty like Evangile, La Dominique and Petrus. Mainly Merlot with a small % of Cabernet Franc. Dark fruits with blackberry and a touch of vanilla. Only medium weight with soft fine tannins. Quite detuned. Cost $45 and drinks to its price point unlike the expensive wines produced by the neighbours. This tiny 0.4 hectare block’s grapes would normally be absorbed by one of the neighbours and end up in a much more expensive Cuvée. The previous Delectable note is incorrectly called Chateau Vieux Chantecaille but the lengthy description refers to this same wine. — 15 days ago

Yes Peter. Having only 0.4 hectare there is no room for a winery so it is vinified elsewhere.
