98 was not a great vintage and why Giacosa bottled the SS as a red label has long been a bit of a mystery. There’s a lot in this wine to like, and no reason to leave it sitting in the cellar. Fully mature, ample bricking, softer but still lively fruit, rich mouthfeel with classic sous bois, a bit of iron, red berry and herbal overlay, and soft maybe a bit overripe tannin. Lovely, but not near Giacosa’s most memorable SSRs. — a day ago

The nose is cidery and not super inviting, but the palate is far more appealing. Bright coppery color. Chewy tannins. Tastes of orange peel and windfall apples. Had this at Osteria Santo Stefano in Piacenza, where their entire white wine list appears to be orange wine. — 7 years ago

Rated 8.9 last 8 yrs ago- now beautifully developed. Plum-prune nose, chocolate dark fruit with blood orange on the palate, just enough tannin for a nice finish with leather and tobacco hints. Delicious — 17 days ago

Pale straw yellow. Dry, medium bodied and unoaked.

Vibrant dark fruit with licorice and a dollop of flowers and tar, intense but balanced with plenty of fine tannin for support. Excellent in a totally different style from the 1997 Giacosa Santo Stefano tasted with it and more lively and nuanced than the 2000 Costa Russi. — 7 years ago
