Château Montviel, Pomerol 2019
All-saints lunch at home with the in-laws. This was poured along a cassoulet (well, high-quality canned cassoulet bought in France this summer and brought back in the trunk of our car). The nose shows tar, cigar box, damp, freshly moved earth in a field, dark cherries, blackcurrant, blackberries. The palate is well balanced. Strong acid drive, nice cherries and black currant notes all along, some width, some weight, a spherical mid palate with tannins. These tannins disturb the overall mouthfeel, which was soft and rounded, as expected for a merlot-dominant blend from Pomerol, by adding a drying layer over a long, blackcurrant and cherries finish that goes on for a while. Some tar notes and a bitter touch blossom in the very end. I don't drink Pomerol wines very often, but I'm always satisfied when I do. It's always reliable and even if it's not always great, there is always a nice story in the glass.

Lovely intense medium cherry lipstick nose. Palate is crunchy cherries. Delicious. Perfect balance. Amazing freshness. Stay tuned ... this will change as it opens.

As it opens the nose is dense perfume. Really concentrated. Almost like a gas transforming into a liquid in your nostrils.

Palate is amazing. Terrific texture. Crazy internal aromatics. Palate coating beyond belief.

90 minutes in this is spectacularly delicious.

This vaporizes chevillon so bad it’s not funny. Cant believe this is a village wine. Wow.

Tanins are still a bit chunky. My guess is that they need another 2-3 years to smooth out.

My first time with Plavac Mali. This wine is from Dalmatia (duh!) A lot of spice on the nose. Bright red cherry flavors, tart. Bit of sweet tobacco and powdery tannins. Very light bodied. A fun alternative to Barbera.

Pale straw gold with silver highlights. Somewhat shy nose of underripe Fuji apple and Asian pear. Firm acidity leads the smoky/flinty light-bodied palate of underripe pome fruit and citrus rind. Remarkably long (8-9 secs) palate cleansing finish. Merciful saints! This is the entry level wine from the Dagueneau portfolio and it makes you want to go higher! Food is, of course, its friend, but if you’re into “sipping culture” this will work for you as well. Seafood (cooked or sushi) is a particularly fine pair, naturally. The palate is structured, medium to strong bodied and very typical of Nuits Saints Georges but with good fruit and balance, making it a good delicious bottle, would be perfect with a touch more length. 90-91 pts
