Vintage Porto Port Blend 2003

Served this slightly chilled (12’C?).
Gorgeously fresh and pure dark fruit. Succulent, juicy, still primary….
Tannines and alcohol beautifully blended into the dense and viscous core. Only a slight hint of spice, chocolate and licorice now. Sweetness and freshness in excellent balance. It even feels more fresh than sweet at the moment. Certainly not too heavy nor intense.
This is so forward and yummy and sexy right now… I just don’t miss the complexity it might be lacking at this stage.
Sure, it has a few decades of life left and it could get more cerebral and complex…
But don’t bother. Drink it now!

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling 2002

Petrol undertones show first, lovely apricot aromas and flavors, this is still incredibly youthful, this wine will probably outlast me, long, lingering finish, but this really holds at the sweetness level (Spatlese) and isn’t in any way cloying, great juice!! — 2 months ago

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling 2017

Must be one of the best Kabinetts going around. Peach and mineral for days - the latter a product of the slatey notes of the Sonnenuhr. Hard to see it getting better than it is now although lacks the complexity of Prum’s better cuvées. — 16 days ago

Too sweet for me, but liked the Petrol on the nose and palate. Similar to previous note but less acidity. — a month ago

Viña Almaviva S.A.

EPU Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2022

Almaviva (EPU) – Blend – 2022
Puente Alto – Chile 🇨🇱

Overview
The second wine from the Franco-Chilean partnership at Almaviva. The 2022 EPU is cabernet-dominated yet crafted for approachability. The blend reads approx. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carménère, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
It delivers a more accessible expression compared to the flagship Almaviva, with plenty of power and Chilean terroir signature.

Aromas & Flavors
Cassis and blackberry liqueur wrapped with violets, graphite, cedar spice and a touch of mocha. The ripeness stands out, yet the freshness and terroir voice anchor it.

Mouthfeel
Deep and plush, yet polished. Velvety tannins and a full core of dark fruit make it substantial , but it remains more approachable than the top-tier bottling. Strong finish with good momentum.

Food Pairings
Grilled ribeye, aged lamb chops, porcini risotto with truffle, or char-grilled vegetables with smoked paprika.

Verdict
An expressive, polished, and beautifully balanced blend. While it leans toward powerhouse, the finesse, lift and Chilean elegance make it stand out. A top pick in its category.

Did You Know?
“EPU” means “two” in Mapuche (indigenous Chilean language) and represents Almaviva’s second label, crafted from the same estate terroir as the flagship bottling.
