Rileys Of Eden Valley

Henschke

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1996

Still a very dense crimson with no tawny rim, at 28 years of age but the tawniness is beginning. A certain feral, Animale, earthy note. Palate is ultra smooth, medium bodied / very savoury yet with a sweetish earthy note with a hint of raspberry. Jancis Robinson was invited by Stephen Henschke to a vertical tasting at the winery in May 2013 to cover vintages back to the late 1950’s. She described the 1996 as “pure hedonism “ and gave it 19/20. Medium plus intensity on the delicious palate with those gnarled old 150 year vines showing through. An absolutely stunning wine - one of the best we’ve had this year. — 5 days ago

Sensational. A rare moment. Really thinking about it. You were probably the only one in the world experiencing that wine.

@Jan de Weerd Possibly Jan. Not sure of the Annual production but it wouldn’t be much as it is sourced from a single vineyard whereas Penfolds Grange has a far larger annual production having multiple vineyard sources.

Mount Eden Vineyards

Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2013

4th wine of BYOB blind. Very light with a slight effervescence, leading us to call this as a natty pinot. Was surprised it was such a classic. Have had Mt Eden Pinot before and this was not in the same neighborhood of depth/forest floor. Alas, not my favorite vintage — 3 months ago

PnP. Better than previous bottles of older vintages. Started out nice but became too tannic and rough for me. Not a ton of fruit present, more earth, herbs, and minerality. Decent depth. — 2 months ago

Pewsey Vale Vineyard

Individual Vineyard Selection Eden Valley Dry Riesling 2017

See previous note in August 2022. Vines planted in 1961 in the Eden Valley. A fuller riper style than the usual Pewsey Vale - still finishing dry. Aromatics of Lemon and Lime. The terroir and the quality of the fruit showing through. Not a hint of TDN (Kerosene/Petrol) showing through. Could cellar for another 3 to 4 years if desired up to its 10th birthday. — 3 months ago

Pewsey Vale Vineyard

Single Vineyard Estate Eden Valley Dry Riesling 2021

Pale straw color with a slight green cast. Piercing aromas of petrol and wet slate with slight hints of white flowers and lemon/lime. The palate features ripe red apple, white peach, lemon and lime with a light touch of spicy ginger. A bit of a chalky texture which is well balanced by bracing acidity. A bit of CO2 bubbles in the glass. Long and lingering finish. Great with food. — 7 months ago

Museum Reserve The Contours Riesling 2010

Medium straw lemon , with hint of green . Shows a touch of age with slight petrol notes along with the lemongrass , smoky , spicy , ripe apple . On the palate good density , with a creamy richness , those lemongrass , ripe apple , slightly spicy notes . Slightly rich and weighty though with lovely balanced acidity and good length . Really good now though can go a further 5-8 years without too much problem — 2 months ago

Paul Lato

East of Eden Pisoni Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

I’m scoring as is today, but I really think this inches upward a bit over the next 5-7yrs.

This fell victim to curiosity (as well as a ‘21 Modus Operandi UV-Laguna Pinot). I’ve had a few of Lato’s entry and mid-level offerings, but this was my first Pisoni from them. Loved it.

Profile wise, this is similar to Dumol (not as big as Aubert, but not a lean style either). A very pretty down-the-middle style. While the aromatics here were lovely (honeysuckle, faint lemon cream, citrus and sweet baking spices), the texture of this wine was a standout. Sports much more depth than initially expected (yellow fruits, peach, apricot, pink cotton candy, limestone)…not quite a lees-y style, but close, while remaining elegant and light on its feet (good acidity). Oak is there but plays a supporting role. For being so young, this was a supremely balanced wine. I need to consider buying more.

@Shay A Paul Lato makes great wines. Many of them drink well on the early side. Great notes.

Kennedy Barossa Valley Grenache Blend 2020

My favourite of the field in a blind tasting - fruitier than you’d think. Smoother than you’d think. But no one else here thought so. I’m broken. — 5 months ago
