Delectable this is a 100% Carignan made by Clos Mogador. This is actually the back label but the front label makes the wine even less recognisable. At Clos Mogador for a structured tasting - this is the first of 4 wines. Aromatic red and blue fruits - cedar and graphite. A big full bodied wine at 15% ABV - ample earthy tannins but enjoyable to drink now. The acidic soil ( from limestone) - fennel and liquorice notes. My notes had delicious at the end. Carignan needs plenty of sunshine to ripen effectively as it does in Sardinia. — 24 days ago

Opened in a family group in Catalunya Spain with no formal notes. Made by the redoubtable Rene Barbier where we having a tour at Clos Mogador this coming Saturday. One of those lovely luscious Mediterranean whites with a skinnsy bitterness with a low acid profile. A blend of Macabeu, Garnatxa Blanc and Cartoixa. Peachy notes in the profile. — a month ago

Nose of ripe plums, blackberries, meats, vanilla and violets. Dark red with slight fading and brown tints around the rim. Creamy and remarkably delicate for the nose, rounded fruits, acidity doing well for balance, slight tightness still in the middle and proper finish of fruits and red/violet florals. Gratallops Priorat Red Blend 2019

At the Clos Mogador tasting at the winery yesterday. This is the flagship - a blend of 45% Garnatxa, 29% Carinyena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Red and blue fruits, also red and blue florals. Full bodied and again 15% ABV. Persistent tannins. The more I drink Priorat the more it reminds me of CdP with influences of garrigue ie lavender, thyme, rosemary etc which grow in isolated patches amongst the vineyards when we drove around. Our host, Josip, said he likes to drink this Cuvée at 8 to 15 years but he went on to say that Rene Barbier’s father liked to drink at 20+ years as the wine becomes more silky and develops more liquorice notes. I bought a bottle of the 2004 from their cellar to take home. — 24 days ago

See previous Delectable note. I love this style of wine - also a great back story. Black cherry, red licorice, dried plum - ripe and intoxicating on the nose. Slaty, minerally even gravelly yet full bodied and savoury with plush rich fruit, Mediterranean herbs like fennel. You need to taste this wine while watching the Documentary, “Dreaming of Wine “ about the pioneers of the revival of Priorat, like Rene Barbier, the creator of Clos Mogador which I am sipping while watching. Makes me want to buy more Priorat. We are planning a visit there in May this year. 49% Garnacha, 25.% Carinena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. — 4 months ago

I loved this wine when it was first released in the mid-late nineties. I held near a case of the 2002 and 2003 but found that, at that time the wines felt less balanced with bottle age and the alcohol dominated. I understand that the style has evolved, with less extraction, less ripeness and less new wood, so I'm glad to see that more recent vintages are aging so well.

Clos Nelin Priorat White Blend 2019

At the Clos Mogador tasting at the winery yesterday. The fact that it was 3rd in the lineup after 2 full bodied reds was no accident This full bodied delicious white more than held its own. A golden yellow in colour - fermented on skins in a combination of vessels including clay amphora. Could be drunk now or last for 20 years. Rene Barbier recently opened a 2000 for the staff and it was stunning Josep said. Notes of dried peaches and tangerine peel. Very mineral. Dense on the palate with great weight. 85% Grenache Blanc with 15% many other varieties. — 24 days ago
