Over the years I have had my fair share of Joseph Phelps, but never had the chance to taste the Backus. Until now.
Massive, immensely powerful and complex. Waves after waves of cassis, blueberry, baking spice, cocoa, and cedar. Very primary. It will take at least a decade to develop properly, but sky is the limit.
I almost felt guilty to drink the bottle at such young age. But what a treat!

Right now nobody in Champaign is pushing the envelope with biodynamics and organics as much as Marguet from what I can see. The results are stunning over the years how he’s fine tuned his growing and winemaking philosophy to these natural pillars of winemaking.
Fine Mousse of tiny bubbles. Crystalline red berries, crisp lines, vibrant and dense but filigreed. Long in the mouth and finish.
Young but very expressive now. Mouthwatering freshness washed over in waves on the palate like waves on a beach.
Very cool wines and not just asthetics, textures and style these or cool and sharp! — 15 days ago

Sat outside in the Azores sipping this after the sun has gone down with the sound of waves as the accompaniment- fabulous — a month ago
Closed at first but with Some Time in the glass and aeration it opens up into a pronounced intense nose with characters of lemon, nashi pear, stone fruit, ginger, blossom and a minerality that ooze like a mountain stream. Ripe in its fruit profile but very fresh and energized.
A slight, badly noticeable sweetness is cut through by a brazing acidity that comes in waves and tightens the medium - body. Medium + flavour intensity with characters of lemon, apples, pears. Plenty of energy on the mid palate, good lenght but falls a bit short of of the end zone
