Quinta Nova

Quinta das Carvalhas

Douro Red Blend 2023

2023 vintage. Decent Douro red blend with Touriga Nacional. Plum in color, fruit forward on the nose and palette, cherry and blackberry with good acidity; slight chew but a decent finish. Pairing with spicy chicken, rice, and asparagus. — a month ago

Quinta do Vallado

Douro Touriga Nacional 2014

Strong red fruit in the nose with a touch of smokey oak. Raspberry and red cherry with a touch of leather and violet opens into round tannins with a dry medium mouth feel. The finish is long with good tannins settling into a touch of maduro style cigar and fennel seed. Very enjoyable and I recommend decanting this bottle. — 3 months ago

Benjamin Bridge

Nova 7 Annapolis Valley White Blend 2024

Colour is very pale with just the lightest hint of coral pink. It’s off-dry with lots of ripe tropical fruits on the noise and palate - cantaloupe, peach, and a hint of floral. It’s a very interesting blend of grapes. — 7 months ago

Quinta de Baixo

Lagar de Baixo Bairrada Baga

Light bodied red, raspberries, some savory notes in the finish akin to Oregon Pinot Noirs. The nose is timid, but the acids carry this. — 3 months ago

La Ca' Nova

Vigne Bric Mentina Montefico Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2015

La Ca’Növa is now under fifth generation leadership; they used to sell all their fruit to Gaja. Super traditional methods with a twist; they used botti made of Austrian oak instead of Salvonian. Vigna Bric Mentina is a sub cru of the Montefico MGA where the soils are relatively sandy.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two hours. The 2015 “Vigna Bric Mentina” pours a garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe Morello cherry, raspberry, strawberry, roses with freshly cut stems, cedar chest, dried herbs and gravelly earth and minerals. There’s also a kiss of VA, just in case you needed a reminder that this is a traditional Italian wine, lol! On the palate, the wine is bone dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and slightly savory. This is absolutely baller. How did I sleep on this producer for so long? Oh yeah…I remember: access. I live in Omaha. Welp…now I have another producer to chase. Drink now with patience (enjoy the ride!) and through 2045.

Quinta do Noval

Noval Black Porto Port Blend

Black a new blend produced from classic varieties that do not make it into the Quinta do Noval vintage. Deep Ruby red color with pronounced aromas of berry fruits, spice and floral notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry, spice, leather and smoke. Long finish, full bodied, smooth tannins, ending with fruit, cacao and tobacco notes. Nice. — 7 months ago

Colheita Tawny Porto 2000

My last dram after a month open. Pretty awesome and complex. The sweetness arrived after a week, and now it’s this marmalade, toffee, fruit cake melange. Alcohol is present but in a warming winter spiced wine kind of way. — 9 months ago

Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal

Quinta da Bacalhôa Península de Setúbal Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing red and black fruits with light wood, spices, chocolates, herbs and peppercorn.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

Elegant and nicely balanced. Complex and interesting.

Still young and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and a good food wine too.

A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Aged in new French oak barrels for 24 months.

14% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

Quinta do Vesuvio (Symington)

Vintage Porto Port Blend 1991

[8-hour decant] Ripe, rich, very youthful still, with a noticeable tannic backbone, but also shows a sweet palate (think Graham’s/Fonseca, though the Symington family owns Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s and Cockburn’s, among others??), this should easily evolve/improve another 10-20 years, very long finish, outstanding vintage Porto, super long finish!! — 7 months ago
