Would rob a bank wearing a mask of the pope to get money to pay for more of this wine.

Pape Star Central Coast Red Rhone Blend 2014

As the name suggests, this is some sort of tribute to Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Central Coast of California. It offers similar style and value to wines from Southern Rhône. It has slightly less earthiness you generally expect of wine of this style. The Pope should definitely consider moving the papacy to Central California, at least for 5-10 years :-) — 3 years ago

Rattlesnake Acres Petite Syrah 2001

Heck of a 3rd Friday to kick off the holidays!

This is how Petite Sirah is best enjoyed! Muddled black cherry, toasted peppercorn, stewed plums and earthy. Smooth and very little tannin on the palate. Almost medicinal with clove. Pope tobacco finish.

Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2013

This checks a lot of boxes when it comes to a stellar Tuesday night bottle... under $30... high quality producer... high alcohol... Napa Valley... and straightforward in its approach, but enough complexity to satisfy the curious. It’s sourced from two Napa vineyards, one with century old vines in Calistoga and another on the backside of Howell Mountain in the hills of Pope Valley. Ripe blueberry with a bramble edge that hints at jam without being over the top. While the fruit takes center stage, there are layers of coffee, vanilla, tea, and cedar, with a chewy grip on the palate. — 2 years ago

Was in their wine club when I first got in to wine. Was able to get an ‘07 PS from them a few years ago and it was flat out amazing.

@Shay Aldriedge Agreed. I remember their 07 being excellent... and have also enjoyed their 2010.

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Not many are doing Clos Vougeot better now than Drouhin-Laroze. There’s always a ton of variability with this Grand Cru, but D-L’s 1ha parcel is on a prime spot high on the hill that used to be reserved for the pope. This wine is off-the-charts for me in 2016 just like it was in 2015, and it’s going to have an illustrious life ahead of it. — 5 months ago

Château Pape Clément

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Sometimes you just have to make sure that it really is perfect... Château Pape Clément is the oldest estate in Bordeaux having first been planted in 1300 by Pope Clement V when he was the city’s Archbishop and before he became pope. The 2010 vintage was the first Pape Clément to receive 100 points from Robert Parker (“Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time...”). The flamboyant and soaring aromatics are infectious and completely captivating. It smolders in your glass. Extracted and plump, voluptuously bursting at the seams with blackberry, crème de cassis, and ganache, featuring a heavy seasoning of cedar, cigar box, crushed graphite, baking spice, and espresso. The background is filled with truffle and incense, making the lavish experience that much more captivating. — 2 years ago
