Supertuscan by Mastrojanni: blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon — 12 years ago
An absolutely incredible single vineyard Brunello from a landmark vintage. Dark ruby color with a slight brick rim. Aromas of forest floor, bramble fruit, tar and dried herbs. Flavors of black cherry, tobacco, black licorice and coffee. Long and luxurious finish and just enough velvety tannin to enhance and lengthen the experience. Medium-plus body and perfectly balanced acidity. Powerful, yet beautifully well structured. Still incredibly vibrant. Sangiovese at its finest! This wine has a personality all its own. Thanking Petey for making this incredible selection. Happy Birthday, Kase! — 3 months ago
Thanks to @Chris MacLean for flagging the NYT article on dolcetto’s by Eric Asimov. This was his pick. Vicki and I both could possibly see what he saw. It was perhaps more focused and elegant than the more abundant San Fereolo. I would like them equally, and pair them slightly differently. I’m grateful for the steer toward dolcetto right now, and discovering examples I really love. — 6 years ago

Night 1 of the Fall WNH event in San Antonio. What a killer start to the extended weekend, all courtesy to Shawn and Jennifer for hosting! Tonight was Italian wines.
Leave it to @Bill Bender to bring a 3L of this! Floral nose of roses and bright cherry. Vibrant. Muddled raspberries, tobacco, and candied cherries with violet. Drinking so well out of a double mag with tons of life in it. A top wine of the night! — 8 years ago

Weird little orange wine but yummy — 12 years ago
So much happening here. Sour mash on the front. No fruit to be found. Oxidized with a touch of funk. Acidity balanced with a syrupy note. As it warms, white pepper emerges. Did I mention phenomenal with saffron lobster ravioli? Yeah, it likes food and as any Marche white should, screams for shellfish. LOVE this wine. — 12 years ago
Little dry. — 2 months ago
An absolutely fantastic single vineyard Brunello. Dark ruby color with a slight brick colored fade on the rim. Fragrant aromas of red berries, tobacco, leather and purple flowers. Flavors of ripe red and black cherries, coffee, black licorice and minerals. Distinct note of forest floor on the long lasting and luxurious finish. Full bodied. Silky tannins and impeccable balance. Powerful, yet quite suave, polished and sophisticated. Aging beautifully and should continue to improve. Absolutely outstanding! Thank you Kase for the wonderful gift! — 3 months ago

Another excellent vintage of this “Baby Brunello.” Dark garnet color with a ruby core. Aromas of red fruits, forest floor, dried rose petals and violets and smoky oak. Flavors of red cherry, raspberry and plum fruit, balsamic vinegar and baking spices. Long lasting mineral driven finish. Round tannins, medium bodied and zesty acidity. Bright, savory and plush. Rustically elegant and consistent from vintage to vintage. From a June 2026 KZ Tasting. — a month ago
