Grosset

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2004

ESF
9.2

Very interesting to see this age - upon release this was extremely tight & austere and now it has blossomed into a beautifully expressive aged Riesling w/dark gold color, big whiff of petrol alongside peach & apricot. On the palate it is still razor sharp & angular w/only slightly rounded off edges no doubt due to age & bit of fat it gained. On the finish it is bone dry with clearly defined lemon & lime, mineral-y w/hint of creaminess. — 8 days ago

Great restraint on your part to be drinking this at 17 years - one of Australia’s best.

Bob: did not have access to my cellar for the last 5 years, but I knew these were built for the long run. I love Clare Valley wines (red & white) and I used to sell Grosset... I have more of these & will revisit in a few years

CRFT Wines

The Arranmore Vineyard Chardonnay 2020

The CRFT cellar door is quite close to home so I’ve been there a few times, but this is my first bottle of their Chardonnay. Small volume, organic, could just about point to the rows of vines from where I sat and tasted. Peach/citrus flavours that run long. Not quite the flinty minerally follow through that I loved with the Shaw+Smith M3 but still lovely. — 10 days ago

Reserve Bin 09A Chardonnay 2015

Second bottle after Bin 389. I like this one more. Beth liked Bin 389 more. This felt smooth but powerful relative to Bin 389. — 3 days ago

Hahndorf Hill Winery

GRU Adelaide Hills Grüner Veltliner 2019

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit. A gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards London 2020. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald have only had their Cabernet (which was quite delicious). Will have to find a bottle.

@Simon Gilligan Quite close to a cellar door visit from where you live. Worth the trip to taste all their GVs. I was a bit disappointed with their Blaufrankisch but I don’t have much experience with this varietal.

CRFT Wines

Arranmore Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019

In the bigger end of the Pinot spectrum, I really like this. Dark fruited, 25% whole bunch, french oak with a lovely dusky crimson/ruby colour. Great fruit density and concentration, spiced, lovely acidity and tannins with a long savoury finish. — 10 days ago

M3 Vineyard Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2019

I tried an on-special-by-the-glass white burgundy from my favourite wine bar - Hellbound (Adelaide). Wow. Blew me away. Gorgeous, flinty, with flavour shaped from start through to its long finish. Ignorant to a tee, I asked the varietal? Chardonnay. Ok then .. so begun my Chardonnay journey and I’ve discovered the Adelaide Hills does it well. Brings me to this, recommended by @Bob McDonald. and am I glad! At the upper end of my buying range this is worth every cent. Takes me straight to that white burgundy (wish I could remember what it was). Opening with subtle stone fruits (grapefruit first, light peach/citrus following) finishing with a long flinty, minerally finish. Complex, interesting, kept me coming back for more :) — 25 days ago

@Simon Gilligan It’s a rip-snorter isn’t Simon. Would love to see it in a lineup of Premier Cru Burgundies.
