Mon Trois

Château des Trois Chardons

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1998

[En Magnum] Lovely, fresh, crisp, old school Bordeaux from the family who were the cellar masters of Chateau Palmer back during this time frame, 12% ABV, perfumed, violets, soft, plummy fruit, great acidity, longish finish, this wine is about subtlety, not power, excellent!! — 9 days ago

@Tom Casagrande, Claude Kolm (a lawyer/now retired(?) used to write/distribute “The Fine Wine Review” — he also still publishes on Substack, I believe he and his wife now (mostly?) live in Paris, and I think you can follow his excellent Paris reviews (free??). . . . Anyway, when I first subscribed to his wine newsletter back in the mid-1990s, he occasionally wrote about this producer, raving about the high quality/fine QPR of their wines, but OF COURSE the wines were only available in Europe, no U.S. importer. But, being the crazy dude I am (surprised?? 🤷), I found a shop selling the wines “in bond” in Edinburgh, Scotland!!?? (Yep) Then, I knew someone importing wines, in the early 2000s they used to be able to fill up a reefer with up to 5 cases of “samples”, which is how this wine got to me (there was also a shipment from Edinburgh, together with payment of taxes, to a producer in southern France, who added these samples to the reefer). Bottom line, I was able to bring in 5 cases, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999, the 1994/1998/1999 were magnums, while 1995/1996 were fifths. Likely a once in a lifetime thing, but love these wines!!

@Doug Powers - Now THAT is determination! Seems like a large work project just to get it! What does “in bond” mean? Decanter uses that term all the time and it always puzzles me.

@Tom Casagrande, “en bond” or in bond simply means the wine BEFORE VAT and any other taxes are imposed. Technically, the shop cannot release any so purchased wines unless and until they collect these taxes. Makes total sense for futures.

Bosquet des Papes

A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2022

Ruby in color with a reddish rim.

Nice nose of fresh red fruits.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, light oak, chocolates, licorice, coffee, spices, tobacco leaf, light earth and herbs.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a delicious Grenache from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Elegant and nicely balanced.

The 2022 vintage was excellent, and it shows. Already drinking beautifully. Very approachable, complex and rich.

The high alcohol is already well integrated. Easy drinking right out of the bottle, and better with airtime.

Still young, and needs 5 years in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Has good potential to become a 94+ point wine.

Very tasty by itself as a sipping wine or with food.

A blend of 98% Grenache with a touch of Cinsault and Clairette. Grapes from 70 year old vines were aged in large French oak barrels for 15 months. A small production of less than 8,000 bottles.

15.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$80.

Moussé Fils

Les Vignes de Mon Village Blanc de Meuniers Champagne Pinot Meunier

Pale bronze with effusive perlage and creaminess. The nose is simply gorgeous with red and green apples and almonds. Freshly toasted brioche bread with a dollop of cinnamon butter. Greenery and fresh red fruits. Stunning. I could just smell this for so long but I suppose I should taste it as well.

Pure Meunier from Cuisles. Disgorged in October of 2021 with no dosage. Terrific balance and structure here, as is the norm for all Moussé champagnes. From a perpetual reserve of wines that makes such a huge difference. The depth here is atypical.

Electric in the mouth. Great length. Minerality and purity on the tongue. A bit of citrus on first taste. Then the spice and fruit come in to play. Whenever I taste this I always think it’s my favorite Moussé champagne. And that’s saying a lot.

Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils

Cuvée De Mon Aïeul Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2000

Used the Durand on the cork - soaked to the edge. Decanted for 2 hours.

This wine had some gaminess. Smooth. Fruit was a bit wild and overpowered by the savory flavors.

Paired well with the chicken skewers and onions. Needed complex flavors in the food to pair well.

Good but quite a bit below the Beaucastel

Cuvée de Trois Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2017

Floral nose, with complex palate. Slightly tart, with ripe tart cherries. While light, it has a more full mouth feel than expected. Quite nice! You won't find a Pinot like this anywhere else! Score 1 for the Russian River Valley! — 4 years ago
