La Mala María

Bodegas Hidalgo

Wellington 20 Years VOS Palo Cortado Sanlúcar de Barrameda Palomino Fino

VOS (very old Sherry), 100% Palominofrom the estate’s vineyards in Pago de Miraflores in Sanlúcar (just 3km. from the Atlantic Ocean) and Balbaína in El Puerto de Santa María, also exposed to the Poniente winds from the Atlantic. Due to this Atlantic influence, wines from these Pagos tend to be lighter, more delicate than those further inland, and this is a great example. Delicate, elegant nose with aromas of orange peel, raisins and a hint of spices. Slightly salty (clealy Sanlúcar). Persistent, hazelnuts — 3 years ago

Casa Marin

Miramar Vineyard Syrah 2008

Alder Yarrow
9.5

Oh María Luz you are a rockstar. I lovingly carried this bottle back from my first trip to Chile, having been bowled over by this fierce female winemaking pioneer who runs Casa Marin with her son. From the chilliest part of San Antonio Valley, a stone’s throw from the sea, Luz’s wine shimmer with acidity and vibrate with energy. At 12 years of age this Syrah is absolutely singing with gorgeous green olive salinity backed by blackberry bramble, dried herbs, white pepper and dried currants. Fantastic acidity and faint tannins make this an utterly effortless mouthful. I wish I had another bottle. Or five. — 4 years ago

Storm Wines

Kingsley Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2021

I could smell this for days. Grapefruit, lemon peel, juniper, peach, sea water, grass. It keeps evolving. Palate is clean with just enough body to make it interesting but not heavy. This got better with time in the bottle. Outstanding! — 2 years ago

R. López de Heredia

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Blanco Malvasia Viura 2007

90% Viuria, 10% Malvasia from La Rioja Alta, Tondonia is a very well respected family that's been making wine for royalty there for centuries. They developed the superb 2007 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva following the founder of López de Heredia's admiration for the wines of Graves, France - renowned for their austere and dry whites. 2007 was a very good vintage in Rioja, much better than anticipated with perfect weather in the months prior to harvest. Hand destemmed and aged for 6 years in new Spanish oak. The wines are evolving slowly and in a positive way.

This has such fresh aromas of peaches and dried pears, dried apricot pit, as well as some fresh almonds and lemon pith in the mix. So youthful. The palate is beautifully fresh and super long, full of energy and lively grapefruit and lemon. Silky texture and a smooth, lightly toasted almond and beeswax finish, with a hint of salinity. María José López de Heredia considers 2007 a great vintage for their wines—extraordinary.

Gutierrez Colosia

Amontillado Seco Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palomino Fino

Fantastic entry-level Amontillado by Gutiérrez Colosia, located right by the sea in El Puerto de Santa María. Approximately 9 years of aging in the solera system. Dark amber color. Elegant nose with caramel, citrus (tangerine, orange zest), nuts. Sea breeze and smoky notes. Medium-bodied, saline, tasty. Long finish, hazelnuts flavors. Great value — 3 years ago

The Relic Shiraz Blend

WEA tasting. 1% Viognier but I’m not intense enough to tell. Smells almost creamier/ more subtle, not crazy tannins. Mala pepper. Blackberries/ black fruit — 3 years ago
