Château d'Armailhac

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

2020 vintage. Nose is classic Pauillac , with cassis and lead pencil. Juicy black fruit, with the freshness of the vintage, but the tannin is a bit rough, and it lacks a bit of length. Good, but seems to be outperformed by other estates at the same price point ( Pédesclaux, Lynch-Moussas, La Lagune to name just a few). Abv. 13%. — 2 years ago

La Maison Bleue Hermitage Syrah

This wine is rich and bold, but not in your face. It has been described as being incredibly sexy and full-bodied. I can’t disagree. This wine makes me want to learn more about the Northern Rhône wines.

Fact: Jaboulet Hermitage was purchased by Caroline Frey family in 2006 (the Frey family also owns Chateau La Lagune). I really love Chateau La Lagune.

And there is no doubt that this wine is best paired with Miles Davis Kind of Blue on the turntable. Prove me wrong.

I love Northern Rhône wines, and some of Jaboulet’s wines the last few releases have been on fire.

@Shay A agreed 💯! Only started dipping my toe in Northern Rhône and just amazed! South African Syrah as well!

Evidence par Caroline Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah 2020

2020 vintage. Bordeaux meets Rhône in this original blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from La Lagune and Syrah from Jaboulet. Needs some time, so decant or give it 15 minutes in the glass. Black fruit ( blackberries, cassis) intertwined with Provence spices. Juicy and spicy, with complexity and very good length. Highly recommended. Abv. 13,5 %. — 4 years ago

Château Paloumey

Château Paloumey 2015

2018 vintage. Located in Ludon, with famous neighbours La Lagune and Cantemerle. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (42%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). A bit timid on the nose, the fruit hidden by cedar wood and a hint of coffee. Medium-bodied with bright cassis fruit and impeccable freshness. Needs time to balance out the oak, but everything is in place. A little patience required, but another fine Bordeaux value at 14 euros. — 6 years ago

Château Siran

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2022

2022 vintage. A blend of 53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot. As Siran is consistently of Cru Classé quality, I've put the bar high, tasting it next to the 2022 La Lagune. While it doesn't have the depth and quality of tannins of the latter, Siran 2022 is an impressive effort, a classic Margaux in the same league as the magnificent 2019 Siran. — 2 years ago

Château Rauzan-Gassies

L'Orme Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. From 30 hectares in Haut-Medoc, owned by the Quié family ( also Rauzan-Gassies and Croizet-Bages). A fine effort, showing that the Quié family is finally serious about quality, after decades of mediocrity. Much more evolved in colour compared to the 2019 Moulin de La Lagune tasted alongside. Ripe, slightly jammy fruit. Serve slightly cold to keep the high alcohol ( 15% abv.) in check. — 3 years ago

Château La Tour de Mons

Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2020

2020 vintage. First vintage for the Perrodo family, who bought this estate from French Bank Crédit Agricole in late 2019. True to type elegant Margaux with the hallmark freshness of this great vintage. A solid effort, but definitely not in the same league as the excellent La Lagune 2020 tasted alongside. Terrific value though. An estate to watch. Abv. 14%. — 4 years ago

Clos des Guettotes Monopole Savigny-lès-Beaune Chardonnay 2015

2015 vintage. This is a red Savigny-lès-Beaune, so Pinot Noir from the " Monopole" vineyard " Clos des Guettotes". Château Corton-André was bought in 2014 by the Frey family and the name changed into Château Corton C. A good start for Caroline Frey (also Château La Lagune and Paul Jaboulet Ainé) with this delicious elegant Savigny with impeccable balance and velvety mouthfeel. Abv. 13%. — 4 years ago

Château de Villegeorge

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

2020 vintage. Equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with 9% of Petit Verdot. Paired it with the same vintage of the best wine of the Haut-Médoc appellation, La Lagune. While it doesn't have the concentration and depth of the latter, Villegeorge stands on its own in a lighter, more forward style, with elegance, freshness and silky tannins. Terrific value. Château Corton C.

Le Val Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

2015 vintage. From an estate bought in 2014, Caroline Frey (also La Lagune and Jaboulet) makes her mark with this Auxey-Duresses. In an appellation where rusticity is the norm, this is very elegant, with bright red cherry fruit, velvety tannin and very good length. Affordable for Burgundy. Abv. 13,5%. — 4 years ago

Château La Tour Carnet

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. This ancient estate was bought in 1999 by Bernard Magrez who expanded the vineyards in such a way that today it is the largest Cru Classé vineyard in Bordeaux. The 2019 vintage is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. While it is no match for the impressive La Lagune 2019 tasted alongside, this La Tour Carnet is terrific value. Dark coloured, with smokey oak, black fruit and leather in the nose. Powerful taste, with concentrated fruit, good acidity and ripe tannin. Good length too. More extraction and less finesse compared to La Lagune, but highly recommended at 26,90 euros. — 5 years ago
