Grande Cuveé 172ÈME Édition Brut Champagne Blend
The Grande Cuvée 172ème is based on the 2016 vintage (58%) with reserve wines going back to 1998. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The wine pours a straw color with a persistent mousse. The nose, which was a little reticent at first, came alive after about 30min of air. At that point, it became redolent of ripe and dried tropical fruit, lemon curd, white flowers, freshly baked brioche, marzipan, and torrone. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and texture is positively divine. Every time I have Krug, I fell like the splurge is worth it. This was an outstanding pairing with the spider crab arroz cremoso. Drink now (perhaps even with a short decent!) and through 2046. — 6 months ago

Another amazing wine from MJ’s cellar, and this time a rare bird made by another Selosse disciple. Almost an antithesis of the voluminous and opulent 80’s Krug Grand Cuvee, this was filigreed, precise, and pure. Not austere though, which these descriptors can sometimes allude to. This had concentration and ripeness, yet remains fresh and airy. Ripe citrus fruits balance some oxidative hazelnut and toffee characters, all framed in a deep mineral and acid cut. Perfect aperitif to the evening and a wine I’d like to try again if it weren’t so difficult to come by. — 4 years ago

Here I am during my last evening in New Zealand drinking Champagne. We went to one of the old fashioned department stores to buy some NZ chocolate to bring back home and I happen to wander into the wine section where I find this 166 which I always enjoyed a lot. Thanks to the Kiwi dollar exchange rate this was just 170 USD and I could not resist :). This is such a beautiful champagne with toasted nut and brioche aromas - unmistakenly a Krug and a well-made classic that drinks exceptionally well right now. — 4 years ago
