Kiss Of Fire

Weingut Groiss

Angel's Kiss Sommerwein Rosé Pinot Noir 2022

This beautiful wine has a slight spritz, crisp acidity ands bright red fruit like strawberry, cherry and cranberry plus lemon, rose hip and an herbal nuance of white flowers and basil. Good balance of fruit, alcohol and acidity. Refreshing and delightful, like summer in a glass. — 20 days ago

🤯 delicious. Microscopic bubbles. Silky gravenstein apple with the kiss of meter lemon and the lightest brioche on the back. It’s just drinking so well — 6 months ago

Neumagener Rosengartchen Von den Terrassen Riesling 2018

Nose: mostly closed on open. Some peach skin. Tiger lilies. Yellow roses. Really pretty with some air. Almost a little vanilla bean but not in an oak way. A 9.6 nose.

Palate: dry elegant peach. A kiss of honey. Mineral. Very elegant. Expansive. A kiss of elegant richness. as this opens more just pure elegance. That vanilla bean. A kiss of peach.

Fass selections.

McHenry Vineyard

Estate Bottled Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2021

Brought to Tasting Group. The 2021 Estate Grown pours a pale ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is youthful with notes of strawberry Jolly Ranchers, cranberries, raspberries, some VA, a light kiss of baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium(+?) acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This is an elegant wine with notable texture and in some serious need for time in the cellar. Fun to try now but this will be better after 2026 and should be full stride by 2031. Expect a long life. Only 200 cases produced. — 3 months ago

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2006

Iron and blackberry right off the nose. There is airy clove and black current quality to it that seems to disappear on the tongue. It reminds me of super fine, dark chocolate. The image that comes to mind is a living oak tree— it tastes alive. Pair with pets for a Beauceron, a loyal, intelligent, devoted dog breed that is known for guarding livestock. Sit in front of a fire, drinking this wine while eating some dark chocolate. Or better yet, a hearty filet mignon that you can share with your new Beauceron best friend. — a year ago

California Syrah 2015

9.4

Forgot I opened one of these earlier in the year. Whoops. Wish I had more.

Hour decant, then consumed from decanter over the next 3hrs.

My note here is fairly similar to the 2014 note, but there is more concentration and power going on. Dark purple in the glass, with aromatics of both sweet oak as well as a kiss of whole cluster stem inclusion. Loads of dark floral notes, ripe blackberries, and smoked jerky. Large-scaled mid palate depth and richness of blue and black fruits with plenty of herbal flair and spice but it’s more iron fist in a velvet glove style. There’s black peppercorn and iron, as well as big central coast Rhône style with its rich and textural palate.

I love Syrah in all expressions. It’s natural to compare these wines to SQN (and Andremily), and rightly so. These are dialed up to 9, but pull back, whereas the others aren’t afraid of going to 11. No right/wrong answer, just style preference. I happen to love both.

I lean toward SQN but get the pull toward Andremily. I’ve not decanted these and may be they just need the air. Andremily always seems ready to go and to be you always sense the SQN power even if I don’t give it the required time. I always want a bit more from Lillian but it’s still delicious.

Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

Still lots of ruby just hints of garnet . Bit more tobacco , cigar box and darker fruits , grafite, fire ash. Really refined . Elegant with red currant , cassis , cigar box , saline touches . Grafite and very good refreshing acidity . Good length , very involving and frankly drinkable . This is very good now though will continue on a high level for the next 20-25 years — a year ago
