Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

Thought I’d give this bottle a try after sitting on it for a number of years. Deep garnet color. Cigar box, wild berries, espresso and leather on the nose. Tastes of red plums, tart cherries, dark chocolate and a hint of of licorice. Tannins are still a little rustic and acidity is perfect. I don’t know if this wine improves much more with age. While it paired great with a steak tonight, it is not a wine I would probably want to just sip. — 2 days ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

This bottle is a half bottle released from the Chateau in 2022. It show some development already with a complex spicy nose. Medium bodied with dark fruits, truffle, dry finish and a good posture. This has a old world grace but this vintage makes it harder to justify the price tag. — 7 days ago

La Forest Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2005

Nice young yellow canary color. Heavy in the glass. Tropical nose with notes of sea breeze, lemon, kiwi, white stones and tan spice. Glycerol and rich in the mouth. California like, but with nice Chablis nuances. I wonder how this will evolve over next 10 years. Maybe like 92’s? — 14 days ago

Beautiful, poised. Very Raveneau. A calm nose with soft lemon, slate, some marine notes. Secondary notes showing through now- a little peach, some light spice too — 9 days ago

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2008

1.5 hour decant(little fine/cloudy sediment). A majestic deep ruby red color. On the nose: perfumed nose of plum, smoked meat, old leather, eucalyptus, burnt cedar, green veggie. Taste: smooth, slightly creamy, elegant, structured wine with black plum, currants, herbaceous, nutty chocolate, leather, graphite and a long peppery savory dry finish. YUM!

The financial crisis and excess wine to sell had the 08 1st growths all priced less than $200 a bottle so I bought a bunch.  At 15 years,  it's finally time to check em all out. This Mouton is a nice start.

@Nicolas Greinacher Yep, gotta use those empty wood cases for something and I have a perfect concrete block wall in the basement I glue em onto. Cheers!

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

Medium ruby still , with some light bricking on the rim . Surprisingly open when opened , tobacco with mixed red fruits , truffle , grafite , lovely definition , touch of blackcurrant and marine , oyster shell . On the palate good weight and mostly ripe red fruits , almost like a fruit jelly in style , but with great acidity and balance , noticeable rounded fine tannins on the finish . Good length , tobacco and mineral notes . Great now , gets better , really grows in the glass . Now and for the next 15 years I would imagine . — 6 days ago

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2004

heavy pencil shavings and cigar smoke on the nose. black olive and green bell pepper too. color is definitely what you’d expect in a 20 year old wine. palate is consistent with nose, very bordeaux-lite. heavy cigar box. a lot of olive and herb tapenade character. some black pepper on the finish too. very savory overall. — 2 days ago

Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Delectable Wine
9.7

The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is the strongest wine from the First Growth in that decade. This bottle, served blind and ex-château in Bordeaux, is so precociously backward that I estimate it to be half its age. Blackberry, cedar and graphite are here as usual, though this bottle has even more intensity than the one served at the estate in 2018. The palate is brilliantly balanced with fine tannins and very intense graphite-infused fruit; there's just a touch more fruité on the finish. Superb. Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon Cote du Py 2019 may be my new favorite Beaujolais, but sadly it is hard to find.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 1995

Taken to Bicyclette in Carmel. Gave it 5 hrs in a decanter. Dark but bright red color. Amazing nose. Notes of black and red fruit, slate stone, spice, menthol and dark soil. Perfect balance of fruit, structure and acidity in the mouth. Tannins mostly softened. This was in the zone. Easily had 10-15 more years of peak enjoyment in front of it. Bravo! — 4 days ago
