Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend

Opened a few hours prior to service and enjoyed over the course of an hour. This bottle of the 1986 was re-corked at the chateau in 2011. The wine pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and some dried dark and red fruits: black currants, brambles, black plum, tobacco, pencil shavings, some dried flowers, green pepper, leather, some earth and a gentle mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This seemed evergreen and this bottle spending most of its life in the cellars of the chateau likely has a lot to do with that. Fabulous stuff. Drink now through 2046.

Classic aged claret aromas predominate with plum, blackberry and cedar. The cedar carries the day in a nice weightless sort of way. Appears younger than stated age, much like my Diana.

Lots of bottles were popped for Weston’s 40th! Only posting a few of my highlights!
A classic, quality, aged Bordeaux. I believe this was probably even better later on in the evening as it had more time to open and wake from its long nap. Herbs de Provence, leather, dusty and earthy underripe blackberries aromatics. The palate was balanced and restrained. Mostly integrated but still some tannin on the finish. Pencil shavings, cedar, old fig, pipe tobacco and tart black cherries round out the finish. Will hold here for a bit, but not sure it’s getting better.

Lovely integration and soft on the palate. Nice balance.

Lovely balance. Still showing lovely fruit and little tertiary elements.

Seemed a bit tired and operating on a low frequency. Don't have much experience, if any, with old Bordeaux but despite the lack of presence I enjoyed the tertiary notes this wine has. Texturally the wine was elegant and beautifully textured. Curious if past prime or off bottle?

Really had some bottle variation on this one, 3 corked out of the case so far, but when you get a good one it's amazing, this was a really solid bottle, maybe a little less intense than a few other '86's out there, but in a way that's what makes it such a great food wine.
