Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2015

Made for steak. No grape juice taste you get from most Petit Verdots. This ones nice and complex with a chocolate covered cherry finish. Waiting 5 years to open my next bottle. — 25 days ago

@Eric Shanks : Probably the best PV I’ve had (aside from maybe one other). I’m going to be down the road from them in a few weeks and plan on stopping by again.

Celilo Vineyard Chardonnay 2017

I really like this producer. This bottling definitely needs a bit more time. The components are there, but aren’t completely in harmony at this stage. The acidity is crisp & the oak treatment adds some textural complexity. I look forward to seeing where this goes over time. — 25 days ago

Agreed cool 😎 winery their 2018 Orange Gewürztraminer was great 👍 and is now sold out in the store which I asked to bring in the wine. They thought would be a hard sell.

Maybe should have decanted this longer. Was good throughout, but really seemed to open up towards the end of the meal. — a month ago

Napa Valley Malbec 2007

Shay A
9.4

Never thought I’d see the day I’d give a Napa malbec a score this high. Though age is a factor, this is the best Napa valley Malbec I’ve had. Everything in balance. I poured blind for a few people and Aussie Shiraz, Cabernet, and Napa Petit sirah were the guesses. On the nose, it shows ripe blackberries, currant, licorice (but not an overload like many Malbecs), dark chocolate shavings, mocha and some cedar. What separates this from other Malbecs is the complexity on the palate...not just a licorice and inky profile. Candied black cherries, ripe blackberries, baking spices, melted chocolate, and a hint of black pepper spice. Nothing flabby, dense or overly tannic about this. Smooth and in the zone. My thanks to @David T who opened my eyes to this wine (and producer)! And props to Mark who called H&G as a possible producer when he tasted this blind! — a month ago

@Shay A That’s two Napa varietal bests for you from H&G. Love Charles Hendricks craft. You might have to make tasting there an annual stop on your Napa trip...seeing as you can walk there from your hotel. So glad you enjoyed!!! Merry Christmas!🎄

I was really digging this. Thought it could have been Petit Sirah, but I leaned more towards Malbec as fruit seemed to be slightly on the inky side with a lot of purple characteristic. Thought it was actually younger than it was. H&G was definitely on my mind secondary to another experience I've had with them in the past that was also really well made. And also reminds me of Robert Young Malbec quite a bit but I don't think@Shay A has any of their stuff in his cellar. Really well-made wine.

Hill of Grace Vineyard Shiraz 1998

Great combination. Cloudburst has to be the closest Chard to a high end white burgundy outside of France. This 2013 was spectacular, with electric minerality. The 1998 Hill of Grace is claimed to be one of the 3 best Australian vintages (along with 02 and 06). Whoever says that Australian wines can’t age is just dead wrong! Anyway, tasted like an aged cuvée CDP and the depth and structure was just outstanding. — a month ago

7-Mile Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Ruby red, dense core of moderately extracted pigment. Aromas of mint, cherry, barrel wood, maybe smoke. Cherry and cranberry flavors, smooth mouthfeel, not much skin or seed tannin expression on initial pour, but they emerge in earnest after 5-10 minutes. It becomes tart after an hour, but in a flavorful, red fruit way. Tannins settle down after two hours: smooth, rounded, red fruit nectar with a touch of allspice, light but balanced. Not your usual style of Cabernet, but for the curious... worth a try if you decant it first. — 16 days ago

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Solid. Good Paso Robles character. Distinct from Napa and Sonoma as it shows more herb, plum, earth. It was advertised with a 9.7 rating which had me scratching my head a bit. — 6 days ago
