Located to the east of the village of Saint-Émilion, on one of the high points of the appellation and it extends over 20 hectares. Ch was promoted to "Saint-Emilion Grand cru classé" in 2006. A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark Ruby with ripe fruit aromas & herb notes. On the palate black cherry & raspberry, currant-like, with tobacco & cacao notes. Dusty fine tannins, long finish ending with earthy mineral tones, drinking fine now! — 5 years ago
Classic blend of CH, PN, PM, 1/3 each. 60+ months on the lees, disgorged Jan 2020.
This is complex & quite profound. Nose shows terrific tension between the lemon, lemon peel & kumquat and the toasted brioche with fresh hazelnuts & freshly made creme brûlée.
Lovely mouthfeel, v. creamy & quite rich yet impeccably balanced with electric acidity, super fine froth and a hint of minerality in the background. Great depth, purity and precision, but most of all, finesse.
This beats most Champagnes flat out.
A truly great wine! — 5 years ago
V99-Took a little while to open. Then reaching ampleness over first part of dinner. Sharper, harder as drunk and compared w same year Ch Margaux — 7 years ago
Complex, rich, balanced, multifaceted. Gorgeous nose, yellow pear, meyer lemon, honeysuckle, white tea, honey, hazelnut, white rocks, lees, cream. Love the broad shape it has, almost reminiscent of CH, very lengthy. — 8 years ago
A deep yellow, almost gold color. Lively effervescence with plenty of frothing and creaminess. The nose is pure excitement with a good bit of oak and robust apples initially here. There’s a nice smoky note going on that is so pleasing. Fresh red cherries and dainty flowers abound. The smear of honey that you get is positively divine.
A terrific grower from one of my favorite Grand Cru villages, Bouzy. Such lovely Pinot Noir from there and this is no exception. Based on the 2016 vintage and composed of 70/30 PN/CH. Disgorged in May of 2021 with a dosage of 1 g/l, there is certainly that beautiful bite that I love so much from these Extra Brut champagnes. A definite streak of elegance and sophistication.
In the mouth, there’s a heft and a weight that comes as a bit of surprise, but a pleasant one. The red fruits from the nose are well represented on the palate. The finish doesn’t last long but you rectify that by pouring another glass. Very impressive. — 4 years ago
Powerful and dense, nicely juxtaposed by the racy chalkiness and snap of its acidity. Some post-disgorgement age has brought great balance and complexity. There’s ripe/baked apple, asian pear, orange peel, white strawberry, fresh dough, chalk, nutmeg, salt, some honey. Can clearly sense the 50/50 CH/PN and their respective terroirs. Kudos for purity given its low-to-no SO2 upbringing, which I find particularly hard to execute in Champagne. 5/2016 disgorgement. — 5 years ago
solid red at reasonable price — 6 years ago
My first time trying the CH rosé champagne. Their Brut is my favorite NV champagne, so I was glad to finally get my hands on some of this. Not surprisingly, I loved it. Similar to the Brut, certainly a battle between fruit and savory yeasty notes, but more strawberry skin and rhubarb pie adding some spice to it. It’s got that streak down the middle showing the older vintage wines they add to these (which I love) adding a bit of English biscuit and caramel. — 7 years ago
Always an easygoing CH — 8 years ago
Wow, just gorgeous for the price. Generous, balanced, layered. Intelligent use of wood here, adds a subtle richness and intrigue. Asian pear, melon, citrus, cherry blossoms, wet chalk, hazelnut, cured meat, sea spray, brioche, cream. Noticeable autolysis character. Nice weight and concentration for entry NV, reminiscent of Ouriet, and there’s an influence from Krug that’s apparent to me. 50 PN 50 CH (1..17-08?) 11/2016 disgorgement — 8 years ago
JV btw Ch Cheval Blanc & Terrazas De Los Andes, blend of Bordeaux "First Growth" winemaking in ARG, blend of Malbec (62%) & Cab Sauv (38%), aged 15 months in oak (50% new), riper fruit, slightly more alcohol than ‘16, deep Ruby, complex aromas of berry fruits & floral spice nose. On the palate flavors, blueberry and juicy blackberry fruit with spicy herb, cacao & smoky oak. Fine soft tannins, well balanced, good acidity, long finish ending with fruit & oak. Will continue to age. — 4 years ago
An enchanting pale rose petal pink color in the glass. A fine perlage with plenty of small bubbles. A classic rosé nose with nice red fruits and a floral character. Black cherry dominate with cherry blossoms and wild strawberries. Fresh herbal aromas are underlying with hot buttered toast.
70/30 CH/PN from Grand Crus in Louvois, Bouzy, Avize, Cramant, and Chouilly, this has an impressive pedigree. Non vintage but a blend of a single year, this can withstand more time being left alone for a few years but it oh so pleasant right now. As much as I love the no or low dose champagnes, the 7 g/l is more than welcome here. Bright acid throughout.
There’s a definite intensity to the fruit on the palate. More of those nice red fruits occupy most of the attention here with a touch of chalky minerality. That familiar yeast makes a quick appearance backing up the herbs and spice. Immensely enjoyable. — 5 years ago
Opulent and complex. Green apple, peach, a bit pipe apple, brioche, fresh bread dough, chalk, sea shells, and hint of toasted nuts. Savory and crisp at the same time. Splendid acidity. Super energetic mousse, though lacking a bit refinement.
Base wine is 2011, disgorged 2018. This and the Bollinger Special Cuvée are two of my favorite NV Champaign from larger houses. With 40% reserved wine averaged 10 year old, the CH Brut Reserve no doubt is a better value. — 6 years ago
Yum! Sandy, loamy soil and old vines in the valley floor of Ch de P create opulent fruit - stewed plum to be precise. But C. St. Jean has balance as well. Traces of black licorice and herbs. Really peaking right now. Perfect with tenderloin. — 7 years ago
Went to a tasting and they were featuring Chalk Hill, winery now owned by Bill Foley, of Foley Family Wines, who continues the traditions that Fred Furth, who founded CH in 1972. Had this ‘16 about a year ago. Rich deep straw color with aromas of stone and tropical fruits and citrus notes. On the palate ripe apple, sweet melon and lemon flavors with gentle vanilla toasty oak. Well balanced on lingering finish ending with oak and mineral notes. Aged well. Tasting Sample. — 8 years ago

Medium straw color; smells like yellow apple and maybe jasmine on the nose; medium acidity; tastes like star fruit, saline, and a hint of butter with a long finish. I'm really enjoying the minerality. — 3 years ago
