Catoctin Creek

Roundstone Rye Organic Single Barrel Whisky

Ginger, caramel, baked green apple, poached pear, apple blossom, slight iodine, cinnamon, dried pineapple and sage aromas. Prickly entry with pine nettle, candied ginger, lemon oil, pineapple, orange peel, lime pith, cinnamon oil giving a capsaicin bite, oregano, rosemary and clove. Spicy and bold, neat. Chilies, eucalyptus and anise flutter behind. Numby. Nice dodge at the end avoids a medicinally disappointing finish. Good stuff. #rye #whisky #whiskey #ryewhiskey #ryewhisky #CatoctinCreek #catoctincreekroundstonerye #copperpotstill #vawhisky #potstill #singlebarrel — 4 years ago

Hazaña

Viñas Viejas Rioja Tempranillo 2014

So I get it... you saw the 92 point score from Parker and splurged on this for $10 and then when your wife complained that it wasn't The Prisoner you wrote a scathing review (on vivino) about this thin, weak, and 'earthy,' wine with 'too much acidity.'

This is a Rioja in Barbaresco's clothing. Rose petal and tar dominate, with lots of juicy cherry, and a sandstone backdrop. A flutter of garden herbs creeps in over time. This is an excellent value for those who know what they're buying.

Lingenfelder Vineyard Pinot Noir

Burgundian quality delicious pinot. Soft violets, silky earthiness, modest young cherries and balanced acidity. Best RRV I’ve had in a long time. Cannot wait to see what the future holds for this new winemaking couple. — 2 years ago

Migration (Duckhorn Vineyards)

Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

The Migration label first appeared in 2001 as the second label of Goldeneye, both under the Duckhorn masthead, first focusing on Pinot Noir and later adding Chardonnay. Like Paraduxx to Duckhorn, it is no longer a second label, but a winery unto itself. In 2008 Migration, and by extension, Duckhorn, produced its first Chardonnay. In 2009 they produced their first Chardonnay from the legendary Charles Heintz Vineyard. The Charles Heintz Vineyard is located just outside of the town of Occidental where Charlie’s family has farmed the land for over 100 years. Two ridges in, and only about 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard is situated in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. Heintz has become one of the most famous Chardonnay sites in California, with notable producers including Ceritas, DuMol, Freeman, Flowers, L'Angevin, Kosta Browne, Littorai, Migration/Duckhorn, Moone-Tsai, Pierson Meyer, and Williams Selyem. With its classic Goldridge sandy loam soils, and located just above the fog line, the vineyard receives abundant sunshine and cool ocean breezes. Super mellow Chardonnay, with candied orchard fruit, honeysuckle, wet stone, and some secondary hazelnut, with just a flutter of mushroom in the background. — 7 years ago

Wow. Didn't know they worked with Heintz. One of my favorite small producers, Montagu Wines, has a Heintz chard coming out in a year or two. Their Durell vineyard and Ritchie vineyard (with the help of Russell Bevan on the Richie one) have been outstanding. Looking forward to trying Heintz.

Elate Grange Cuvée Dry Creek Valley Red Blend 2013

A nice tribute to the Penfolds Grange- nice dark, plum color. Aromas of blackberries, plums, baking spices and a flutter of vanilla. Nice black fruit, soft spices on the finish. Paired nicely with some bruschetta. — 6 years ago
