Fossil & Till

Davis Vineyard Petillant Naturel Riesling 2020

Fascinating pale gold straw color.

A cidery in the nose. Pears, fresh cut cold apple slices, peaches, slight essence of cardamom.

What a refreshing quality of effervescence to add to a tart, mineral, and blade of grass of a wine.

This is just fun, and reinvents this varietal for lovers of Riesling.

Always see the producer around and Simply Wine just added new bottles to their collection, subbing this slot in for Scribe (which is good, known, and kill the branding game, but not always best value).

Plus we got Finger Lakes in the house, which always feels great to support the local-ish wine scene.

Welcome addition.

Tanzen Dame Riesling 2014

9.2

This has greatly improved over the past 3 years in bottle. On the nose, funky overripe pears, fresh apple cider and petrol. In the mouth... all kinds of weirdness...in a good way. Pear, wet rock, forest shrubs after a rain (we called them “mountain misery” when I grew up - I don’t know what they are really called). High acid, long finish. This producer is one of the most interesting in the US. — 4 years ago

Finger Lakes Rkatsiteli 2020

Medium body, abundant legs, pale white. Apricot, honeysuckle and apple cider on the nose. Juicy pit fruit on the fore palate, scant sweetness, with a lingering peach compote on the finish. (Bacon wrapped pork tenderloin medallions on a bed of mixed green salad with beets, cucumber, and Gorgonzola, chicken- broccoli Alfredo over pasta rustica on the side) — 3 years ago

Brut Finger Lakes Chardonnay Blend 2013

David T
9.0

Saw this recently in the store and it made me realize just how long it been since I’d had anything from the Finger Lakes, let alone a sparkling.

This 2013 is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Meunier and was disgorged in October of 2018.

The nose reveals; green & golden apple, pear, ripe pineapple, lemon, lime flesh, white peach, tropical melons, vanilla notes, cream soda, nougat, butterscotch notes, honeysuckle, saline, smooth, soft chalkiness, volcanic minerality, fruit blossoms, yellow florals & spring flowers with mixed greens.

Good mouthfeel, nice mousse with just the right amount of richness. Green & golden apple, just a touch of apple cider, slightly, bruised pear, ripe pineapple, lemon, lime flesh, white peach, tropical melons, vanilla notes, cream soda, nougat, butterscotch notes, understated white spice, honeysuckle, saline, smooth, soft chalkiness, gritty volcanic minerality, fruit blossoms, yellow florals & spring flowers with mixed greens. Nice acidy for sparkling. The finish is well balanced & smartly polished, sliding into penetrating, heated, white spice as it long sets.

Delicious sparking wine.

Dr, Konstantin Frank was the 1st to plant Vinifera vines in the Eastern United States. Vinifera vines are the only vines used to make quality wine.

Blackduck Cidery

Dry Perry 2019

One of the best. Sidra-style perry made in NY, but not faddish at all. John Reynolds, one of my favorite iconoclastic wine/cider-makers, has been doing it this way for decades. Micro production. Loads of VA but flat out delicious; vibrant, textured, rich and soulful. Do yourself a favor and find some of this if you like natural wine. I’d argue this kills almost any high-VA natural wine. Why? There’s a historical precedent for the style, the flavor profile makes sense, it’s clean and well-made. Great stuff. — 4 years ago

@Erik Longabardi Yes, some batches are less sidra style, all really amazing. Just had some sparkling paw paw wine he gave me that blew my mind.
