Dark purple/red color. Pretty deep color. Smells like stewed plums and cherry cider. Hint of soils and forests floor. Maybe a tiny bit of masking tape. Flavors are zingy and tart with a nice minerality in the mix. Plums cooked down. Not prunes but like Santa Rosa plums. Slight hint of licorice/fennel/anise in the finish. Plenty bittersweet. This is more complex, chewy and strange than most CA red blends. The label says ‘dark chocolate, dark cherry and toasted marshmallow’. I get some dark chocolate, but not the rest. Less candy and more good cooked fruit things… — 2 years ago
Drank one a week ago, so good drank another one. Dark fruit, spices, gorgeous fruit, great potential too.
Tellement bon, on s’en tape une autre. Profil fruits noirs, des épices, une bouche dense, fruitée, de la poigne avec des tannins assez enrobés. Un vrai délice. 91-92 — 5 years ago

Top notch pure cab franc. Spicey and subtle fruit notes. Dry and delicious with food. — 8 years ago
The label reminds of Black Tape For A Blue Girl album from the 90s — 9 years ago
This is Ophiolite Russian River Valley Merlot. Dark and stormy color. Purple as purple. Smells like old books and jams. Hint of tape and paints. Chewy and fruit driven. Cassis and the rest of black berries. Complexity and intrigue are here in spades. This is a beaut. — 2 years ago

It’s like a Cali best of or greatest hits mix tape. — 5 years ago
Robust, big Shiraz hitting the tape at 14.9. But had jammy fruit uncontaminated by oak. — 5 years ago
Frick makes gorgeous wine and this is no exception. Opulent with classic Gewurztraminer fruit and floral notes. Dreamy winter wine I just want to keep smelling. Duct Tape Wine. — 7 years ago
Last night, this top-three-wine-of-my-life, from the one of the greatest hands ever to prune a vine, the mythical Burgundian Henri #Jayer 🇫🇷 , who was an inspiration to so many great winemakers (including those of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti). Jayer was the template, the prototype, doing pure, unfiltered, minimal-intervention wine long before it was even a thing. Drinking this 1959 Jayer #Richebourg was like getting to listen to the original master tape of Zeppelin IV 🎸, experiencing it exactly as the artist intended, with elevated highs, more resonant bass, and sharply delineated nuances 🎶. Even after 58 years, it was fresh and generous, a veritable Roman candle 🌋 of plums, cherries, spice, and smoke. It had this minty-woodsy character than reminded an artist at the table of “Arches watercolor paper” and “India ink”. To me, it was like the best forest you have ever smelled -- Muir Woods 🌳 in a glass. Its velvety finish rolled on forever, and only after about 40 minutes did its overall taste finally start to fade. This wine had everything. 🙏 — 8 years ago
Classic, pretty Spanish label of abstract art evoking greens and blues of the ocean. Great garnet red color. Smells like mineral water, painter’s tape, rosewood and smoked pork products. Flavors of rosewater & cherries in a rich cheesecake. Or maybe a bit of Red Zinger and rosehip tea with a bit of red grape juice in it. Very floral with elderberry jelly, raspberry sorbet and flower essences all in the mix. For a screw-top cheapie at Grocery Outlet, this is excellent, graceful garnacha. — 2 years ago
Weird nose. Like tape. But the flavor is Christmas. Clove. Pine. Really good. Fun. — 5 years ago
1989 La Mission Haut Brion. Decanted and strained through cheesecloth over 4 hours prior to service. Glad we did. Continued to open up for the next 1-2 hours. Cassette tape, acetone, blueberries, gravel, soil. Really long finish. Drank side-by-side with the 1999 DRC Echezeaux (which we decanted just before serving) and it was a toss-up as to which we favored. Very different wines. The DRC was feminine, had more fruit, and a refined elegance. It was the favorite early on. However, as the La Mission evolved, it became hard to decide which was the favorite. — 5 years ago
Inside Virginia, I will be very strict and stern with my ratings for varietals… The tale of the tape —>> to the scorecard our key indicators. this fella may be a little on the downward slope even after 5 1/2 years. I will remind myself that this was a cool vintage and the sugars We’re going to be in a tug-of-war with the beneficial acids. Purposeful for the meal we connected, this was not, however a purple bomb… Rather an accurate rifle shot at 100m. To his credit: the nose was nearly perfect in varietal representation. The pallet lost an edge as the mid palate dark chocolate body turn just a touch savory — 6 years ago
