Domaine Maurice Chevillon

Maurice et Claude Gaget

Côte du Py Morgon Gamay 2022

The fruit on this thing is ridiculous. So vibrant and pure. Dark cherry and zingy purple berries (David Crosby!). Crushed granite lurking in the background. So mouthfillingly fruity on the palate. But it’s got really electric, integrated acids. None of the slight disjointedness or astringent/bitter notes I’ve had in other ‘22s. Not super complex but I’m here for the fruit on this one! — 17 days ago

Les Chaignots Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2012

Not part of our little “Vosne-side of NSG” blind shootout, but it might as well have been. Opened earlier during dinner as a blind, I thought it looked very NSG. Why I had it there was mostly down to the elimination process in our blind options. Right on I was, but had it younger.

Very dark fruited on the nose, along with earthy, spicy notes and hints of dark chocolate and moss. The palate was quite pure and elegant, with grippy tannins and an earthy, lightly mineral (which didn’t seem to grow with air) finish. When drank side-by-side with the pair of 19’ NSG during dinner, it didn’t quite have the depth not intensity of the two. It certainly wasn’t as bombastic as the MG, nor had the obvious “goût de terrior” notes of the Grivot, but had a certain elegance I liked.

Mount Pleasant Wines

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 2005

Deep Ruby in colour. Strong earthy stony aromas with deep ripe plum plus red and black fruits. An example of a Hunter Valley wine trying to be like a South Australian Shiraz - too ripe and full bodied. “Clumsy” HH said when it was first released. Thankfully wine makers lately in the Hunter have returned to the old medium weight, savoury, “sweaty saddle “ style. Returning to this 2005, this is more full bodied and rich but the quality of the very old vines planted by Maurice O’Shea pulls it over the line as a high quality wine. The more recent vintages of Maurice O’Shea are of extreme quality (2014 - 99 points), back to what the Hunter does best, and will live for decades. — 4 months ago

Good fruit intensity but a bit sunny, leaves out some of the potential nuance — 7 months ago

Les Saint-Georges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

This seemed tighter than the Vaucrains with an underlying elegance that needed some air to reveal dark cherry, raspberry, crushed rock, underbrush, dried herbs, spice & violets — 6 months ago

Les Perrières Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2002

Old school burg! Love this vintage. 02 Perrieres is showing beautifully tonight, red fruited, elegant and seductive, descriptors I wouldn’t say I typically associate with NSG. A lengthy slow ox has it wafting from the glass with dried raspberry, brown spices, game bird, forest leaves and a liquid rock minerality. The palate shows impressive power and concentration with melting tannins and a persistent mineral inflicted finish. At peak but should hold through 2029. — 8 months ago
