Been saving this as Cesare’s Barbera was transcendental and I knew the Barolo had to be at a minimum profound. My instincts were correct. The style here is classically styled but a hint of polish with such subtleties. More Robert Bressan than Jacques Tati. Just a stunning nose. Gorgeously refined, defined and perfumed cherry. Incredible mineral spine. Woodsy, salty. Just so complex. So perfumed. Flowers galore. Elite aromatics. Level of precision, refinement and vividness that is remarkable. Top top class. What a palate. Incredible fruit and so refined. My goodness this is one sexy, elegant wine. Wow. Chambolle 1er Cru like. So so pretty. Beautiful salty, cherry fruit, velvety and sweet tannins and just remarkable freshness and a 1/10th of a percent of opulence. The tannins are so sweet and refined but this does not come across as sweet due to the pointed minerality. So long. This will age decades but it is ridiculously great today. But ideally better and more integrated in 5 years. What a distinctive style here. — 12 hours ago

Killer nose and killer color. Gorgeous nose, spice, orange rind, roses, so precise and linear. Cherry flower, licorice. Like a Seurat painting. So detailed and complex. Precise and perfumed. Palate is fresh and incredibly energetic. Gorgeous. Wow. What freshness and energy. So clean. Big medium cherry fruit and unreal precision. Really well made. Palate has a lovely bit of opulence. Awesome tannins and length. This is such high level winemaking. This is like almost Germanic in its precision. Great inner mouth aromas. Really elegant. This is great. 9.3 for now, but I see this going to 9.4 with air. — 3 days ago

Sick nose. Red berry fruit. Loads of it. Sense of deepness and richness. Some spice and saline notes as well. Palate is juicy, complex and has terrific freshness and so much minerality. Wow what’s this? A mineral driven Barbera? Yes it is. Great cut and juiciness with some good berry fruit but this has st Joseph like fresh minerals that are just delightful. Terrific depth and structure. Even seems a bit young, as does most very serious Barbera which this is. Long persistent finish of black and red berry fruit and beautiful minerals and substantial tannins. Really really long. after air the nose really gets going. Super complex gamey, earthy and mineral notes. Man it’s like if old school Cornas (mineral style like cuchet/Fauterie) mated with very serious Barbera. As this airs more fruit comes out but it never sheds its mineral core. This is terrific. Great power and depth. This will age for at least 10-13 years. Will be back more as it airs. — 12 days ago

The top wine at Sòt. Darkest color of all the wines so far but still very light in the grand scheme of things. Nose is fascinating with big boy sour cherries. So sappy and pure aromas with a wild herbal, mineral, feral side as well. Perfumed and elite but wild. Love it. Leather, tar, roses, tea. Wow what a palate. So refined and elegant. Super super elegant. It just floats. This is incredible. Nose led me to believe one thing but palate has me believing another thing. Really concentrated and just bonkers complexity and that insane Sòt freshness and transparency. Superb, actually elite structure. Really deep. A beautiful wine that has substantial tannins as it airs but deep fruit and just incredible minerality. So long and a taste of precise cherries and rocks on the palate. Nose opens up more with an insane penetrating perfume. Less wild, more of a crushed rock, mineral perfume. Again, that tiny hit of 16 opulence. This has linearity and energy for days. So pure. Young but man this is the bomb. So so promising. — 12 hours ago

Tremendous color. Looks like Chateau Simone rose. Watermelon, strawberry, spice, a lipstick like intensity, spice, earth, florals and mineral. Deep cherry. Cherry lozenge. Floral. Citrus and Tree bark after some air. A gorgeous nose. Palate is ripe, juicy, full of tannins and structure. Terrific acids, man is this zingy and fresh and even has some citric zest to it. Tannins build up on the finish. Very serious Langhe Nebbiolo. — 3 days ago

Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

First 16 nicely balanced. Bright. Good cherry fruit. Hint of licorice and bitterness. Nicely juicy. Sweet fruit. Palate coating. Very clingy.

Not a great barolo at this point. But a great barolo with food.

Nice, always loved this bottle. It's a blend of all their (Nebbiolo) Cru sites, great value.

I’m loving 2016s from northern Italy, especially reasonably priced entry level bottles like this Barolo. It’s crisp enough to drink well now, but there’s plenty of structure for the cellar. — 2 days ago

The nose is pleasant but a bit musty and tired, like I’ve rented a 150 year-old farmhouse on the coast of Ireland for a quiet weekend away. Upstairs, in an old sock drawer, is an ancient bag of potpourri containing dried herbs, crusty rose petals, and lumpy brittle strawberries that mingle with the peat and damp hay drifting through the air. The palate is fresher, brighter, the same but somehow newer, like the proprietor of the old house, a 30-ish strawberry blond named Fiona, whose great-great-grandfather built this place with his bare hands, has burst through the front door to greet me with a wink and wry smile. Like her, this wine is feminine but not delicate, stout but not burly, complex but not ostentatious. I’ll spare you any further indulgence of this tortured metaphor, but this wine is nearly everything you want in a mature Barolo – the acid is bracing in a good way, the tannin fully resolved, the balance exquisite, the length prodigious. — 9 days ago

Very pretty and complex nose of spice, florals, chestnut, old wood and baking spices, cherry flower. Palate is supple and open with terrific sappy fruit and energy. Deep fruit. As it opens the spice becomes so intoxicating. Cuts a swath across the palate and has dazzling purity and freshness. Really leaves such a fresh impression on the long finish. Big tannins and lovely mid season cherry and spices in the mid and fan onto on the finish. — 3 days ago

Comm. G.B. Burlotto

Dives Langhe Sauvignon Blanc 2018

The nose is spicy and intense, while showing all of the textbook nuances of Sauvignon Blanc, displaying gooseberry, grassy sour lime and hints of kiwi, as smoky mineral tones develop in the glass.  It’s wonderfully textural on the palate, both sweet and sour, as the cheeks pucker from zesty citrus-tinged acids, yet there’s a ripeness to the fruit here that creates beautiful contrasts.  The finish is long, perfumed and full of tension, leaving the mouth watering for another sip.  The 2018 G.B. Burlotto Dives is fermented in large acacia wood barrels which gives it so much complexity and presence on the palate. — 9 days ago
