Langhe Rosso Red Blend 2016

Picked this up from a nearby package store on Cape Cod for less than $20. I love drinking entry level wines from top producers. The fruit might not be their best but there is every ounce the same effort that goes into these wines as the better wines. If it has their name on the bottle, the wine had better be good for that category.

This Rosso is fruity and a little wild. Red fruits and some floral notes come through. Reasonable finish. It was rather lovely slightly chilled.

Bric dël Fiasc Barolo Nebbiolo 1990

Reddish amber and tawny. Nice soft old Barolo nose. Notes of ripe cherries, some black licorice, dark moist soil, a little tar and some rose petals. Silky in the mouth. Don’t think this can get any better with more age. Good stuff. — 20 hours ago

Occhetti Nebbiolo d'Alba 2016

Last night, early am flight back to Miami. Not going out with a big bang but instead one final solid bottle of Nebbiolo.

Lightly fragrant, high acidity, dry, 14 ABV.

NOTE: As a statistician, I suspect that my ratings while in Italy may have a built in +0.1 upward bias (e.g., an enhancement due to the experience of being there). With more data, I can test this via regression.

Rabajà Di Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2000

Very complex nose, ripe but not weighty. Masculine aromatic profile— black truffle, balsamic reduction, graphite, bright rose petal. Layered palette with plenty of tannins left. Good to drink, would improve over 5, maybe 10 years? — 8 days ago

Ferdinando Principiano

Boscareto Barolo Nebbiolo 2011

Another Nebb I was forced to pay attention to as it was paired with one of the courses during dinner. Bigger than the 14' Cascina Fontana - perhaps even the biggest red of the night, but somewhat not unexpected for the vintage. Nevertheless, it's still elegant and polished. Palate was full of dry sweet red fruit and spice, balanced by a clean racy finish and dense minerality. Nose was driven by sweet berry notes, some orange oil, leather, pepper, dried herbs, balsamic. Gripping tannins. Muscular, but finessed. A momentous effort. As expected of CW's choice!

NB: Macerated for 30 days and then aged in large Slavonian Oak (20 HL to 40 HL) for two years, followed by two more years in the bottle. Annual production is usually around 4000 bottles. The write-ups on Chambers St Wines and Vinhulen are nice reads - Ferdinando's change from modern to traditional, to eschewing chemicals in the vineyard and even letting the undergrowth run wild, to the "greatness" of Boscareto. Excellent discovery!

Killer nose. Deep purple fruits, spice and lovely minerality. Palate is concentrated. High toned with terrific grip and minerality. Lovely purity. Great length. Stupid good for a dolcetto. Awesome ripe tannins. Super pure. Wow. Sappy. — 3 days ago

Langhe Nebbiolo 2016

I thought this was the weakest of the Nebb during the night. Having said that, it was pure and balanced. Just lacking the stuffing of the others around it. Would drink it anyday!

NB: This is a declassified Barbaresco Straderi because Olek was in trouble with cash flow while finishing the construction of the new cellar; he decided to release this gem one year earlier! Long maceration in cement, aged in a large slavonian botte.

Wednesday Wine Committee. 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert wine. All tasted blind as usual.

Much better compared to the ‘98 it shared the table with. Much more peppercorn, tar, bay leaf, rose petal and a density in the middle without being too heavy. Tart red and black fruits all over the entry and finish. Still on the upward trajectory. I called this CdP.

Cascina Fontana

Barolo Nebbiolo 2014

Now this I paid attention to. Mainly because I was forced to - being paired with the duck course - but also because it was quite brilliant. Needs a decant though to open up that nose. Very rosey, red cherry driven, with some spicy, savoury intrigue (balsamic vinegar, mint, rosemary, liquorice, mushroom, a little game) and maybe some oak (hint of vanilla?). Like the other Nebb's in the dinner, the palate's elegant, but I guess that's the only way CW would have it. Some might call it light even, but for me, it's got great presence and makes it the more drinkable Nebb during the night. Again red fruits, orange oil, smoke, earth, tabacco leaf, mineral. Long finish with a very refined structure.

NB: From BBR - Mario decided not to make a Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto in the 2014 vintage, so this is very much a “super-Barolo”, with a higher percentage of Castiglione Falletto (75 percent) than in 2013 when it made up 60 percent. The remaining 25 percent comes from their La Morra Giachino vineyard.

Castiglione Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

First taste of a 2015. This is everything I hope for in Nebbiolo. Rose accented red fruit aromatics. Subtle power with texture and structure. Great with mixed grill meats. One of my favorite wines. — 6 days ago
