Cloudy Bay

Esk Valley

Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2017

Elegant new world Chardonnay made in one of the best NZ wine region of Hawkes bay. Slightly oaked that brings the vanilla out along with a butter popcorn balanced with citrusy grapefruit notes. One interesting note: hints of daiginjo sake on the nose; perhaps it’s the white flower or lychees aromas. Nice new world white. — 4 days ago

McHenry Vineyard

Swan Clone Pinot Noir 2012

No formal notes as I drank this bottle in a line-up of other great wines but oh man, woman and child...these are killer right now. Balance and authenticity typical of McHenry; leaning more towards the darker edge of the red fruit profile. This has depth that I rarely find in Pinot Noir short of drinking one of Hubert Lignier's stunners from M-S-D. I realize that seems like an exaggeration but it's the honest to God truth. Structure that will allow this to last for another decade and possibly longer. My WOTN with the 2014 Rafanelli Zinfandel and NV Christopher Tynan "Le Sucrier Velours" a close second (or third, if you will). Only 96 cases produced. — 12 days ago

Te Mata Estate

Cape Crest Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Very pale lemon in colour. Aromas of gooseberry, citrus blossom and barrel ferment characters - a bit toasty and nutty. Blended with a touch of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. On the palate peachy notes - fulsome in the mouth. An excellent wine, all the better for the oak maturation. Richard Heming MW said of this wine “could be Graves or Pessac Leognan”. I really enjoyed this - from one of New Zealand’s best estates. — 3 days ago

Kutch Wines

Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

Zoom group tasting with Jamie Kutch tonight. Easily one of the handful of top California chard’s I’ve ever had. The yin/yang of power, alcoholic restraint, and sheer complexity is mind-blowing. Granny Smith apples, Meyer lemon and tart Yuzu notes float above a solid foundation of barrel weight and acidic structure. I just want to keep sticking my nose in the glass all night. The finish is long, generous, and morish. Thank you Jamie for your passion and drive to produce wines at this level. — 10 days ago

Horseshoe Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

From 375ml in a Grassl Mineralité, on the nose it is a dead ringer for 2006 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, with lemon, apple, and a touch of hazelnut. Loaded with acidity, it.benefits from air and warming up some on the glass. — 4 hours ago

Craggy Range

Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay 2009

One of the best Chardonnay I have had. 11 years old but so so youthful. Balanced, fine, focused and sensational complexity. Hints of wheat, beeswax, white peach and oak, it’s just super composed. Such a pity it’s not made anymore. — 13 days ago
